Hey Linda~

"All you have to do is ask your domain registrar (GoDaddy, com, NetworkSolutions.com, etc.) to redirect it to your blog"

You'll need to call the customer service folks at the domain registrar and have them redirect your domain to your blog...unless you know a super tech that can do it for you ;) It won't work until you do that.

Yes, I just took a blogging class recently and the instructor suggested getting a domain name especially if I ever want to sell anything. It took about three weeks of looking several hours a day to finally get a domain name(you weren't kidding!)However, I didn't know that I don't have to use the long drawn out wordpress address...that I can just use the .com address. I just tried it and it didn't work, so I'll have to see what's wrong. Thank you!

I just went thru all this few weeks ago. Bought my domain hoosiermama.com but when I searched for it initially, it was taken but "parked" on Go Daddy. I contacted the owner directly and she sold it to me. Signed up for hosting. It's being built right now by my designer..so if you go there you won't see much yet ;)

I just got my own domain for my blog, I love being able to do what I want with it (and not having the long name is a plus too!)

Thanks for the post, and great comments! I didn't realize that about the re-direct. And it's understandable why it would be a good idea to register the 'brand' on other sites, too. I just learned about Go Daddy this week. Looks like I have some shopping to do...

I did this a while back...and I actually didn't have not one problem getting my domain name! That's how I knew that I would have that as my photo business name :) It was just meant to be! I too went though GoDaddy--and one of my favorite features is that I now have a customized e-mail address that coordinates with my blog/site :)

great tips! Although, I've never had problems registering my own domain...but then again, I am pretty creative. I haven't thought of one that's been taken yet

I always tell newbie bloggers to get their own domain -- it's inexpensive and it can't hurt for all the reasons you cited Ree. There's another reason -- if you register your domain at the outset, you ensure 1) that someone else isn't using your blog's name already in their own domain (so you won't get any letters telling you to cease and desist) and 2) that someone else can't use your blog's name in their own domain going forward, because you already own it.

And after you have your own domain, consider getting that same name on Twitter, Flickr, and any other place you'll put your info. Start building your "brand" before you need to use those names--otherwise someone else will get them.
