actually your idea is possible
people already upgrade their ram, videocard, hard disk and proccesor.
for videocards its called MXM and lot s of computers have it!
as for proccesors, most laptops have socket p for proccesors which makes them ugreadable.

As several commenters already noted, there are more changes going on than just increasing CPU/RAM/HDD - that won't be upgradeable while maintaining the external form factor. Furthermore the computers keep shrinking physically, which is particularly important for laptops.

Keep in mind that if you want your laptop to last for more than 3 years it would have to have higher grade components and a metal enclosure, which makes it more expensive in the first place. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, not necessarily at all, but I don't think it is doable in the name of a cheaper computer, unfortunately. The current "disposable" computer and cell phone paradigm ( ≈ 2 years lifespan) has emerged to minimize perceived cost, more so than for any other reason.

I think a better solution (also already mentioned) would be some kind of rent/service agreement where the computer is replaced at certain intervals. To avoid making that an envirocide, the components have to be highly recyclable - but that's the way things seem to be going anyway (at least Apple does that, and HP I believe). That way, you might get less cost penalty of upgrading. But there is no way of future proofing anything, ever!

There is project from this, I think it's from whoever does the Lifebooks... you pay once and provided you get a warantee every time, you get a new laptop of equivalent cost every year or two. UK only though

That would be nice, but that means you'd have to do without your notebook for while when it is being serviced.
Also the shell will eventually need to be replaced, and as I have mentioned with another idea, the motherboards would all require identical ports or the shell would need interchangeable I/O plates on all affected sides.

how about a plug-it-in laptop?I mean everything will be in compact mode...compact RAM, compact Prpcessor etc. you have to just plug them in and use it...then you can replace them any time....what about this idea?
