What security features would you want to keep your child’s notebook safe while they’re on the Internet?

I'd rather say security blocking keywords. Or else, it could use a program that knows what type of website the kid is visiting (thanks to a database that a company keeps up to date frequently) like in companies. Something like OpenDNS but for personnal use !

-Linux
-no integrated webcam or microphone
-masked IP through VPN
-real contents of the HD hidden from the police and parents through encryption

I don't care what they do on the Internet as long as they don't get caught.caught.

unfortunately growing up without locks on the computer i found my way into porn and all that which i now regret horribly. But i would have to say that the features i would like on my child's notebook would be bluecoat and all of that stuff and also locking them so that only the person that knows the password can access that site.

yeah, i agree with ninja. kids arent always out to wreck their pc, and look up porn, download harmful stuff, etc. most teenagers know more about the internet than the parent.

Personally, you should relax, and not spy on everything your kid does. I do believe that kids should go around talking to people they don't know, or that they should become addicted to porn, but you can't watch everything they do.

Half of kids are going to end up trying drinking and smoking pot, it's just a phase.

If your kids are smart with computers, and want you to stop spying on then, they'll find a way around any software you use to try and block things and spy on them

Finding a safe place for your kids in the internet is like finding a public playground where there are no potential bullies and where you can STILL KEEP AN EYE ON THEM. There's no getting around the need for parental supervision in a child's formative years. Relying on security set-ups and software to filter your child's net experience is like taking a shortcut or looking for an easy way out. Children are crafty and are smarter than you think. Even though they're watching the Kid's channel, I still make sure I see most of the content of what they're watching. You just never know these days. Same is true for the internet.

my parents did this to me as a kid lol.... but basically block content, and ensure that they cant talk to people they dont know, or share any information with strangers.

Maybe make them appear to be an adult to anyone they dont know somehow? false identity unless they are on an approved list?

Security for your child is certainly important when they are surfing the web. The security program has to be compatible with any browser of course because a lot of kids are smart enough to install a different browser. The program also should not be like the security system in vista, which repeatedly asks you for a password for doing almost anything, which became extremely aggravating. Instead, when the browser is first launch the security program should ask for a password to disable any filter so you do not have to deal with the security system and repeatedly entering your password. Also it should disable those ads in the side bars that are like games. Kids often like to click on those leading to a different website, often not a very trustworthy site that could infect your computer. Making a security program will prove difficult because it must judge whether a website is an appropriate website.
