Good Touch, Bad Touch: Do touchscreens bug you?

My phone is giving me button nostalgia.
My toddler, like most two year olds, enjoys a good button. His eyes widen with possibility whenever we take an elevator. When he turned one we gave him the old TiVo remote as a toy, and he didn't look up for an hour. To be fair, he was also really into ice tongs at the time, but the point is this: Even babies know buttons are satisfying.
As an adult, button feel can heavily influence my decision to buy a camera, remote control, microwave, or keyboard. I want bounce, feedback, a discernable click.
Lately though, everyone has been enamored of touchscreens, and it's easy to see why. They're still novel, and magic for the right task. A few reasons I'm grateful for touchscreens:
Flipping through albums
Writing steamy messages
Mixing and scratching
Zooming, grabbing, tossing, and stretching
Finger painting
Entertaining small rodents
See? Magic.
But Hamstertainment aside, I just don't love typing on a touchscreen. Without tactile input to guide me, I mistype words, struggle with URLs, and battle with overeager autocorrect. (What the duck, spell check?)
I'm in favor of touchscreens with added dimension, and I'm not alone. A variety of solutions are emerging, from sub-screen depressions to Braille-ish bumps.
My hopes are pinned on inflatable bubble keys:
Can you even imagine a world where you could play virtual bubble wrap with inflatable bubble keys? Friends, that's the world I want to raise my children in.
I don't mind touch screens, there are lots of just awesome things you can do with them. I completely agree with the author of this discussion. Typing is a pain in the Butt! I once forgot my cell phone, had to text my mom, and it took me a few minutes to say 'I'll be home at six' :P whereas on my Nokia 3110c, I could have typed it in 5 seconds (literally)
touch=good =)
if you look at the things that have touch screens:ipod touch iphone ect.
im not sure about you guys but all the ppl with thoes like the touch screen and so do i
Well I think that touchscreens have just become to much, At first people thinks "Oh this is going to help me, it's going to make me faster and more efficient." And once they get one they become extremely dissatisfied with it because the market over prices touch software just because it's been made more accessible to the public. And besides touch software serves no use to most people it's just a highly unrefined, alternate way of doing things the wrong way.
I use an iPod touch and although I have figured out a pretty "fast" way of typing down my notes, it is nothing compared to the normal keyboard on a computer. Touch screens also bug me sometimes because your finger like accidentally slides over onto the wrong thing and you have to pay really close attention to what you are doing just to click the right thing. It also just doesn't give me that satisfaction of "YES, YOU HAVE JUST BEEN CLICKED".
I like the idea of touch screens but if i need to write something I would prefer using a keyboard and mouse. If you have ever used a Nintendo DS before, and needed to write something down on the touch screen, it can be annoying to attempt at writing the letter and have the game recognize it as a different letter. Over all i think that touch screens can be fun, but for typing and writing I'll stick to my key board.
Yeah I think touch screens annoy everyone even though some of them are useful. I have a iPod touch and the only thing that disappoints me is when I look at the screen when its off and see how dirty it is.
I have a Palm Piolot and a Palm Phone, both annoy me with the touch screen. Even with the iPod touch, it you have large fingers you will touch more the one thing at a time.
Though I find this mostly only happens to me on the iPod Touch because the buttons are closer together while on the Palm they are more spread out
I havn't really had much experience with touch screen, but I do hope to soon. What I have noticed when I used them though is like you said, I feel uneasy because I'm not sure if I'm actually hitting the button I want or not, so I have to keep my eyes glued on the screen. But like I said, I havn't really got to use one very much. I think the bubble keys is a really cool idea, and I would love to see a keyboard like it someday.
I'm not really into touch. I'm more like the old fashion cursor and keyboard. I think touch isn't as accurate as normal. I just wanna feel te buttons I press. But everyone has his own opinion.
I like certain touch screens like the iPhone, it is very responsive and it doesn't bother me. But i cannot stand some touch phones that are very sensitive and they don't respond correctly.
