I Believe Apple doen't want to run their OS in an non-apple computer by a simple reason: They don't want to compete with Windows! (If you compare the number of windows users, to the number of MAC, iMAC, MacBook, etc, the results will be ASTONISHING!)

IBM PC was open enough at it's beginning. That's why it defeat other systems on the market. I really like idea the and I like OS independence (I use FreeBSD on desktop and linux on laptop). For the first, I think there's 3 simple things to do over standard design http://www.wepc.com/vote/view/dream/9821/eeepc_1XXX on the way to it.

Mac OS can only be installed on a computer that has a specific Apple Registration chip. It's impossible to install Mac on a PC because Apple won't let Mac be installed on anything besides an Apple computer. Also, Dell (And maybe HP, not sure about that one) already offers computers with Linux pre-installed on them, thus, it's open source.

To all of those who is saying that Apple wouldn't let people install this on their computers: What has this computer to do with Apple? If the USER wants to put Mac on the computer and the USER knows how to put Mac on it then Apple only has it's user agreement which the USER can choose to follow. An agreement between Apple and the USER can't stop the computer from being able to run it...
As long as it's possible to imitate the checks made by Apple software then the software can run on a system doing so...
Whether ATI or Nvidia is going to publish their hardware specifications is up to them, fortunately there are many other companies making video cards, that might be interesting in taking share of this market which these two dominate so very well...
Open source hardware is already here, but the main factor is to change the perception for both the consumer and the manufacture to understand the importance of openly specified hardware.

Why even specify which operating system it will run by default? Or for that matter limit it to any kind of software? Whether people choose to run something proprietary technology then let them.
For all of you asking what this person is on: A great idea to openly specify every piece of electrical component, openly specify all dimensions, openly document every technology used in the hardware. Having all of these freely available secures that we never end in vendor lock-in, anybody can freely repair or improve the computer.
When the computer is made open there is no barrier for others to get inspiration and continue the work of others - not saying that this is free to produce and sell (the whole monetary part can be regulated according to the vendor) but when the customer has bought the product then the customer is in charge.

I have to agree with AJ... Open-Source Hardware? Sirusly dude, what are you smoking? XD
Though AJ you are wrong about some stuff like the drivers, ther ARE open source drivers. FACT, when I installed a variant of Linux to my friend it came built in with open source drivers which support wide ranges of hardwares.

Opensource hardware what are you smoking... Yeah totally opensource hardware, I don't like this resistor. I'll just replace that. Opensource drivers? You can just make up a driver (.dll) just like that you need address number etc, and if you did you be a smart person. Don't even use linux. Linux is used on netbooks and server computers. Linux is bad. To edit something you have to open the command line and type stuff you have to remember which line of code does this and that. And you can run Mac it's call Hackintosh. Google it some time.
