NETBOOK PC : IDEA
IT Admin's Netbook
Posted in netbook | October 29, 2008 10pmSmall, lightweight, something like EEE901 size/weight.
Again, battery life is very important: 5-6 hours on the go, without CPU throttle.
Runs infrastructure diagnostics - Linux, Windows Server Management tool.
Specialised ports for network testing:
Fibre channel port,
Gigabit + network ports x 2,
Cat5/6 cable tester built-in (seperate port?)
USB hub-on-flylead, so netbook can be plugged into a rackserver and used as a keyboard/monitor. Like a built-in KVM switch.
USB storage flylead - like above, but allows laptop to be plugged into firewire/usb/esata and be recognised as a portable storage device.
OS to have built-in ISO-serving function, so can appear as a USB DVD/CD drive to servers. -

Architect / Engineer's Netbook
Posted in netbook | October 29, 2008 10pmRuggedized netbook for building-site use. Preferably splash-proof to some extent.
Battery life should be 5-6 hours, without resorting to throttled CPU, so CAD software can be left running.
The important item is a built-in laser distance finder. Place netbook next to wall, press button, get exact distance to target opposite (like Leica laser distance finders)
Also a built-in frame (structure) finder (either ultrasonic or magnetic) would be really handy too.
Bright high contast screen for outdoor use - maybe e-paper?
