Thinking it through more, a built-in screen could be optional. The laser projector could be the single mode of shared and/or large format viewing with goggles for personal use...

The laser for the keyboard and 3D work could be housed in an aerial-like device that extends above the simple tablet for its top-down view...

    NOTEBOOK PC : DREAM

My Dream PC is a total re-write of man-machine and machine-peripheral interfaces for notebooks.

Invaluable space is lost to trackpad and keyboard that have limited applications. Replace both with a single input-surface as big as the screen. Project a keyboard using lasers in the lid, switch to trackpad or tablet use with a voice command or by activating a hot-zone on the input surface or its bezel. User-defined zones on the input surface for fast access to anything. Laser keyboard could assist hard-of-sight users by telling them where they are about to type - predictive typing could guess the intended word with a voice-activated confirm to accept it.

The laser could also track hand movement during typing to constantly ensure the current user is the authenticated user.

A full-size input surface would allow 1:1 ratio with the screen making accurate drawing easier. Three lasers (bottom middle, and two top corners) can track users' hands in three-dimensional space making manipulation of objects and gaming easier; move items in stage mock-ups, animate characters in movies, control character in a FPS game.

Laser Projectors are small enough to fit a notebook (.26 by .79 by 1.57 inches) mirrors and fiber optics can drive both the projector and input devices. The projector should project away from the user, behind the screen, or allow pan/tilt adjustment if possible.

Remove all connectors except power and replace them with a universal connector using Bonjour over WiFi. A connector-aggregator with USB, FireWire, Ethernet and VGA/DVI connectors would allow print, scan, display, read DVD or HDD and even access a wired network without carrying excessive amounts of cables and connectors.

Two cameras; one facing the user, the other facing 'behind' the screen.

N.B. Although heavily dependent on the OS, more attention to voice control is required. Dedicated hardware coupled with improvements at the OS level should target making the keyboard and trackpad obsolete. Then again, much interaction is around finding information so a search agent app might be a way to jump over the lack of current support from the OS.

P.S. - your graffiti tool is not easy...
