Posted in notebook | October 29, 2008 2pmThe name might need some work but as someone who uses his laptop exclusively for gaming and work I have a clear idea of what I'm looking for.
Price is always a big issue as most laptop makers oversell a lot of gadgets on cutting edge toys. But what is really important to me is just running the best-selling games at a decent frame rate and not all the bells and whistles that come with added power usage, excess heat and most importantly cost. My suggestion is to take the most popular games of the current year, extrapolate the hardware requirement trends out for a year or two and then build a spec sheet based around that with the most power and heat friendly quality parts you can find. Then work on eliminating all bottlenecks. From there you can make an upmodel with more powerful hardware.
The other big thing I'd want is for the power to be scalable to fit my current usage. For example if I'm playing a power hungry game I will more than likely be plugged in to my adapter and not need to worry about power. But if I am on the go I'm going to want to be able to play some light games without having to worry about running out of power. So at the very least I'd want some really great power management to underclock based on need to save power.
A pretty far out idea if you really want to launch a great gaming laptop is to work with a linux distro or even Microsoft (if they are willing) to create a boot option to boot into a strictly gaming environment. Even if this is just for old games (like gog.com carries). This way you can strip out all the unnecessary processes that consume resources and possibly power. Then you can do a quick boot option like ASUS already does for internet and skype. If done properly you should be able to improve both performance and battery life and also scale the computers performance and power usage to the needs of the game.
