NOTEBOOK PC : DREAM
The College Student
Posted in notebook | October 30, 2008 2pmThe main feature of this PC would be the touchscreen keyboard/mouse track pad. This would take up the usual section reserved for the keyboard. All the normal keyboard functions would exist. The track pad would be activated on a user customizable portion of the screen because you never type and use the mouse at the same time. Also included on this screen would be the ability to create custom function buttons for volume, screen brightness, anything. The resolution of the touch screen should be high, proportional to the viewable screen
The components would be fast, no skimping. A multiple core processor that can manually be clocked down, and its speed is adjusted automatically for power saving. 4GB of fast DDR2 ram minimum (1066mhz+). Modern video chipset, 256mb+, ddr3+, nvidia or ati, again the clockspeed is user adjustable and auto-adjusts for power saving.
SATA SSD configured in raid0 or 5; 2x64GB, 4x64GB, 8x16GB? (cost effective) but fast.
Until large SSD capacities becomes affordable, a slot loading 1.8in 120GB hard drive option for higher storage
bluetooth, 802.11n, optional 3g/cdma/wi-max/gps connections, 1G ehternet, sd card slot, no dvd, no blu-ray
Installation of programs and the OS should be done through usb flash drives, or e-sata connections
Screen resolution of 13" 1280x800 min.
No included OS, but able to support any OS (mac, linus, windows, unix, etc)
The constructions materials should be of high quality: aluminum, carbon fiber would be nice, little if none plastics.
This PC is designed with high mobility in mind. Magnetic power cord should be standard on all notebooks. Some of the main concepts of this laptop should include a general fast PC core (processor, ram, video, busses, primary SSD, LAN, wireless) and a nice screen. The next concept would be the ability to customize the input methods, by having a touch keyboard/track pad, it also could be used as a drawing pad/endless options. Low power consumption can be achieved through powering down components not needed and new battery technologies.
Software Notes,
Also the way software is bought should be redesigned: download and install should be the primary source, but software should be sold on flash cards/usb sticks, because these could be mailed back for a rebate and reused multiple times. Also the installation process could be automated so when the card/usb stick is inserted into the computer it installs automatically in the background and lets you know when its done.
