Fibre cable extender/super-KVM
Posted in gamer | November 5, 2008 5amI want performance at home. I want a powerful workstation with lots of space for disks and other cards. But I don't want that monster anywhere I can see it or hear it. It should reside in my closet, but I still want access to optical drive, USB, firewire and audio at my desk.
My solution is the super-extender. It consists of a unit near the PC where cables from the PC is connected, and another desktop-placed unit with optical reader and all dvi/audio/usb/etc connectors. It should also have an on/off switch so you shound never need to touch your chassis.
The two units should be connected by a industry-standard fibre cable, which should allow the two units to be placed far from each other.
This idea describes the simplest variant with one-to-one connection. The more advanced configuration could have multiple computers attached just like any KVM switch. -

Vesa mounted silent workstation/gaming rig
Posted in gamer | November 5, 2008 5amThis is a silent monster designed to provide performance without stealing desktop space. It's composed of a ATX or Micro-ATX aluminium chassi with double, industy standard, VESA mounts so it can be fitted behind your 20" (or larger) monitor on your standard wall mount or on a monitor with a regular stand.
The chassi is 1U-1,5U thick so components can be shared with 1U servers, but most standard components should fit as well. Standard is 1 external power supply but 2 is supported for redundancy. Silent, server-class 1U PSU:s would also be ok.
All standard PCI and PCI-Express cards should be supported using PCI raisers. This high-performing chassi has build in heatpipe CPU and GPU cooling, and the entire chassi is cooled by two high-quality, slient, slow-spinning huge fans (with easy-to-clean filters).
On top, 4 x 3,5" disks can be inserted in prepared and vibration-dampened slots.
Easy access to optical drive, usb, memory card readers, firewire, audio, ps/2 and other external connections that you frequently need is important. Therefore, all these are placed on an nice-looking external unit which can be placed on your desk, wall-mounted or whereever you want it. You should never have to touch the chassis during normal use.
The chassis should have plenty optional cable guides, and look nice and stylish behind your monitor. No annoying blue diods, please.
