instant on always on, atom as coprocessor
Posted in gamer | November 2, 2008 9amthink about your overclocked quadcore, always on gaming rig and the eyewatering electricty bill it causes.
you have a second machine, maybe Atom based, which consumes much less power, but you need a KVM to switch between them, two cases, cables etc.
why not use the Atom as a low power coprocessor, taking control of the machine, when it is mostly in idle state, or running homeserver and p2p stuff, while the idle hardrives just spin down.
it could also keep the ram alive, so you basically never switch your pc off any more. if you need more power, play a game, the full power system with cpu, graphic card, gets into gears.
yes, a second power supply would make sense too, pico psu based.
the 100-150 dollar extra are easily covered by your reduced electricity bill within a year. -
