NOTEBOOK PC : IDEA
Touch I.O.
Posted in notebook | March 2, 2009 10pmGlass multitouch keyboard/gesture area means flexible input methods for different applications, and is easy to make it liquid/spill resistant. Similar to the 2-screened prototype ASUS just demo'd with a multitouch interface (keyboard / trackpad / multitouch gestures in one) but with three main differences:
1> multitouch input screen is OLED (like the Kindle 2) instead of LCD. This would save a lot of battery life, and who needs their keyboard/input interface to be in 32 million colours anyways?.
2> multitouch screen is detachable from display screen for ergonomic setup at home. Connectors are similar to the "mag-safe" power adapter cables for quick assembly. Communication between input screen and output screen is 'wired' when they are together to save battery power (ie when traveling, which is when you need it). Wireless communication between input and output screens is automatically started when they are separated for adjustable ergonomic use(ie when at home and/or when plugging in is available). At home it's like an iMac, on the road, it's like a laptop.
3> it will have both an SSD (for OS) and a HD (for other software, data). It'll boot up really fast because the OS is on chip, and still be easily upgraded/customized (unlike cell phone OS's) but still have affordable, expandable, data storage via its regular replaceable laptop HD.
Of course, the OLED half does limit you from having a larger joined screen for movies, but it would still work as a book reader. The name indicates that one half, the OLED, is considered more an "Input" screen, while the LCD/colour screen is more considered an "Output" screen. The OLED will cut down not only on battery usage but weight and cost. Plus, it would just be so cool to have an input screen that could dynamically change from a keyboard (for word processing) to a set of paint/drawing tools (for art/design) to a mixing board (for recording/mixing music) to a piano keyboard for entering music into notation software. Every application can have it's own interface(s) best suited to the task at hand. Also, it will be much more spill/liquid resistant than a laptop with a regular keyboard.
Let's make this happen ASUS! So many people would buy this, and software developers will love you too :)
