The worlds greatest netbook
Dream PC Description
- The Asus EEE 2001 -Available in a variety of colors, and custom prints, the new smart and mimimalist Asus drEEEm is the new hotness in the netbook world. Available this christmas in limited edition black leather, gunmetal and carbon fiber.
This assuming new netbook resembles a flattened shiny egg. Fat on the top and curved in a metal enclosure underneath, the units bottom resembles the larger underneath of an iphone, and is a smoother version of the acer aspire one. 10.4" x 6" x .7", this shiny little clam is sporting the new dual core 2.0ghz Atom chip and two gb of ram, and a new specialized graphics chipset developed by nvidia. This is the first unit to feature a 4gb flash storage AND a hard drive inside the same shell (in 120gb and 320gb flavors). A smart move that gives you the best of both worlds
Running at a resolution of 1280x768, the aluminum bezel around the screen measures at 3mm allowing the vibrant anti-glare glass screen stand out.
VGA out standard, hdmi out on higher models. This is a beautifully sexy machine, and looks anything but like a toy.
New to this netbook I am calling the Asus DrEEEm is an instant on gui that will allow access to web browsing, and other features in just a few seconds. It will be compatibe with XP, and vista. i am told it will also pay mp3s and read ebooks ! awesome!
Also added here is the addition of a thinkpad style mouse nub on the keyboard. The touchpad size has been increased and features multi-touch capabilities like the 900's, and macbooks, and gratefuly upgraded and silenced are the previously noisy and stiff mouse buttons.
An exciting new feature comes in the form of a small asus app, thaat mimics the iphone and touchflo interfaces momentum style scolling. When scroling through documents using the touchscreen it is very comfortable on this size of a machine to switch between the touchpad and finger input on the touchscreen ... and flicking through a blog on a 10inch screen is extremely satisfying.
Another smart design choice allows the user to attach a thick 5 inch antenna to the side of the unit to boost signal strength. however this highly useful hardware creates a striking contrast against the beautiful device when pluggd in, Like a macbook air with rabbit ears.
While I didnt notice at first, the touchsreen is able to swivel around, converting this guy into a mini tablet, changing the layout of the OS as you swwitch modes. Also being demonstrated is a low power e-book reader mode as part of the instant-on OS. Splendid!
And thankfully included in all models is a full gps chip and bundled software. Sweet
I am told that the web camera above the screen is a 3mp, and swivels around to accomodate this transforming netbook.
The keyboard seems responsive and well designed as on the best netbook keyboards. and hides a man sized styles underneath near the front.
And there is totally a six-cell battery with 6hr plus time.
And last but certainly not least - when plugged into another computer via usb, it acts as an external hardrive. This is a must feature for all netbooks, and i daresay even some laptops, recently included in the raon everun note.
As I am asked to put the unit down and end my time with it, I am told that the LED lit ASUS logo on the lid actually acts as a wifi detector. and a future model with a solar panel is in the works.
also breify discussed for future models was a built in removable flash drive, capable of carrying settings and portable apps from your netbook to other pc's. I like it !
Base unit is $429.99. All come with a sleek neoprene sleeve case.
$529.99 for 320gb hard drive and hdmi out.
$699.99 for the 3g data version, only avaiable in certain parts of europe.
Vote for me if you want to see these features in the next EEE
