Portable Desktop II: The Gee PC Gaming Rig

Dream PC Description

We basically have an ultraslim form factor unit about the same size as a cereal box with an upgradable MOBO, CPU, RAM and SSDs. This communicates wirelessly to a dual screen display with approximately 10.1" per screen (more than 24 inches diagonally when in full movie viewing mode). Since only the display and the touch type interface are sitting on your lap it would be light and wouldn't heat up. The base station will have a 24 cell Li Polymer internal battery that can be automatically switched to an external battery pack without turning the unit off. Finally, the GPU will be expandable using an adapter type side panel attachment that will place Larrabee, SLI or Crossfire GPUs in a parallel orientation with the MOBO to save space and maximize heat dissipation.

Yeah... yours is very similar to mine. I didn't realise someone had the same idea as me. Nice job and alot more detailed than mine. Sorry about the late reply, I hardly visit this site.

Thanks for the comments!
@Maaaja - the original intention was to create a laptop that had a desktop sort of lay-out (That's pretty straightforward and simple enough to do right?). The catch is the wireless data transfer. If that can't be resolved then we can tether or wire the video to the main unit.
@deadmaus - actually we may be looking at a lower priced unit if the wireless server-dock is considered. You're willing to pay upwards of $1000 for a decent desktop right? I'd pay more than that for a server dock unit that I can wirelessly link to several cheaper laptop units that basically consist of a screen, a keyboard, small CPU, minimal onboard SSD storage, and a workhorse data transceiver.

Excellent...i would love something like this! However, i dont thimk we will see it on the market very soon!It would cost an arm and a leg.

High price = smaller market.

Smaller market = Less sales.

Thanks Damang. Yup another battery is required for the monitor and keyboard but since it will only be powering the LED and tranceiver for the keyboard and screen, i'm guessing the drain will be pretty low and expected battery life will be good. Plus it has an option to be tethered to the main cpu for charging.

This will be definitely the choice for Gamers and a good platform for mobile game developers.

Is it a virtual keyboard panel? I mean, is the lower screen displays keyboard arrangement when needed? if it is, Wow... neat.

But, I'm thinking about the wireless connection. I think this is going to consume more energy. You're using 2 batteries, right? 1 for the CPU and 1 for the dual folded screen. This will be the challange for battery manufacturers.

Anyway.. it's very good idea, and i think it can be build.

This concept is also good. Why didn't they include the other one? Any ideas on how that will fare in the era of UWB or bluetooth 3?

wow. Thanks for the input b-rainst0rm. I do see the potential for those applications as well. I'm also an art and photography enthusiast and I do like the idea of being able to edit my images with a dual touchscreen on the road. It would take a lot of computing power though.

Couple of ideas:

>People could use this laptop for multi-stream video editing in apps like Sony Vegas, and editing images and drawing diagrams in apps like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator would benefit from the bottom screen being all touch.

>Gaming on a laptop with 2 screens can allow the user to move the HUD to the lower screen while playing on the upper screen. And if the laptop doesn't offer enough power the dock can jive the extra boost needed.

>The laptop should have hybrid graphics of Intel and the same vender as the graphics card in the dock (similar to the ASUS N10Jc Netbook).
