Instant on!
PC Idea Description
Instant on! Instant on! Instant on! Instant on! Instant on! Instant on!
Simple really. :-)
I want a (Windows OS) netbook that comes on instantly, or as near instantly as possible, like a mobile phone or Pocket PC does, but not with the 'clunky' Windows Mobile OS. Surely in this day and age that is possible?
It's all about the software. The technology exists to do just this but there are not any software companies, that I am aware of, that are developing this. Maybe have an EEPROM, or something of the sort, with the os loaded on it. The main problem with todays software is that every time its powered on it has to do a search of hadware and initiallize the proper software, i.e. driver, to use the hardware. What needs to be developed is an O/S that doesn't have to do this every times its powered on for use. Maybe make it do it if you change a piece of hardware, not like a flash drive but a big piece like a video card.
I agree with Tom - all OS's should be on chips, not on HD's.
Well, currently some netbooks and the Voodo envy have that feature, they boot in a couple of seconds into a type of linux with its own little hard drive that has some multimeda applications and i think the voodo might have like skype or something
Don't dump the RAM to hard drive, dump it to my $10 high speed USB drive instead. I don't need the whole computer to run only on the SSD--it can have both SSD and hard disk. I've seen that ASUS Eee with SSD can start much faster than the one with hard disk. So I'd like to have a setting to Dump RAM to Flash memory for Sleep mode.
Linux is working towards minimizing boot times. But if you want to stay in windows it would be difficult unless you had a vastly improved version of "hibernation mode" where it just dumps the RAM to hard drive and then loads it back.
@Your Friend: Right, right, right, but the mobiles can use "standby" in a very effective manner, which is the problem here. If you could put your PC in standby mode without draining the battery in one day of standby, that would be the solution. I'd say that ideally the computer should be able to eat only 50% of the full-charge battery in one week of standby to be really usable. And, well, sometimes Windows (and other, Linux is no exception) takes some time to go out of standby, so while it is much faster it is not "instant on". :-)
@Daver: that's exactly what does the HTC Shift, and it's pretty much disappointing.
Just put both OS on the same computer and make it easy to switch. Run Windows Mobile for instant on and when you need Vista run the other OS.
Hehe, some mobiles have a considerable boot time anyway.
Yes. I agree
