PC Idea Description

My idea is for a standard form-factor for laptop motherboards as well as components. This will give the consumer the most bang for their buck while having an eco-friendly impact. Here's how:

1) Create one or two STANDARD motherboard sizing/dimension specs. So, when the next innovations bring even faster FSB speeds, we can replace the motherboard.

2) Modularity: Make everything modular connect to the motherboard. CPU, RAM, Video, Drives, Cooling fans, maybe even the wireless networking and audio if feasible.

This will allow us to hold on to the other, perfectly good components and replace them at their own rates of innovation.

3) Easily detachable/replaceable screen. Let us upgrade the keyboard and screen separately.

Not only does less stuff end up in a landfill (or need to be recycled), but consumers can upgrade a component at a time, extending the life of the laptop indefinitely.

The same form-factors/standards could be used for small-form factor desktop PCs - allowing them the same benefits.

I further agree, this in my mind would be excellent

In addition to what I've proposed above, this would require one more thing.

4) STANDARD AC adapters with standard connectors. Sure, maybe it ends up being a 10-tier standard, but standard names for these ten adapters across different manufacturers would help.

I own one laptop (an HP zd8000) where different versions of that same model use different adapters (some 7W, some 9.5W). Even the companies selling the AC adapters can't seem to send me the right part number. They see ZD8000 in the name and grab the first adapter they see.

I agree completely. Many industries could do this and save tons of resources, making our planet so much greener. But then again, wheres the profit incentive if people are ultimately buying less of what you are making?
