Dockbook
PC Idea Description
A single "dock" connector on the side of the laptop. The dock connector would allow for passthrough and breakout. This would simplify component, case, and header layout on the system, while increasing flexibility by allowing VGA, DVI, video out, audio out, input, etc, etc. The concept is not unlike existing laptop docks or the iPod/iPhone dock, but would marry the two.
Replace all the ports on a laptop with a dock, while eliminating the redundancy found in many laptops that have both PS2, USB, docks, video, etc. You can even place the antenna for wireless devices in this interface so that you can maximize wifi strength without doing weird ugly things to the case of the laptop.
This would allow a laptop to be much smaller as there would only be a single connector, instead of an area with 6 different connectors.
What you are describing is more or less the Apple PowerBook Duo from back in the 1980s. And yes, it was a really great setup. The notebook was (for the time) incredibly light and compact, and when it was docked, it was essentially invisible. I've never seen as nice a docking setup since.
