PC Idea Description
Using all open-source hardware and software, this PC would be able to run any OS - really, ANY. It would have open-source drivers for all of its devices and only use devices from companies which provide drivers for Windows, Linux, and Mac (the big 3). It would not use devices from companies that don't acknowledge other OSes, like Atheros (Wireless) or Linksys.
Using open-source software and hardware would reduce the overall price due to increased hardware demand and generally free software (Linux, Open Office, Kubuntu). It would run Kubuntu by default due to its ease of use and relationship to the Windows desktop style. It would also have the support to load Windows or Mac if the customer desired.
It would also be fast in any OS. Fast video in Linux, fast bootup in Windows (Linux is already fast at this - maybe SSHD?), fast memory for Mac.
If I name my computer "MAC" then i should be allowed to install Leopard on it :p
Its not doable cause Apple would never approve of someone making a product that runs their software (sure you can crack it but... you aren't supposed to do that) except for that you can proly do it
Linux is an open source and is faster than windows. Mac has taken Linux and has modified it to me more user friendly. Did you know that your linux can boot faster that it is now doing because, when you don't look at the boot up settings, it starts processes that are unusefull for you like bluetooth for old computers or things for servers like DHCP !
This is a wonderful idea! In fact it may already be possible.
OpenSPARC is the second open-source processor of it's kind (the first going to LEON), and it already supports several OS'es.
In addition, there are now open source alternatives to BIOS, as well as other controllers. (MCH, etc)
I think we may be closer to this than you think.
Cheers
Impossible!
Maybe everyone here already talked about this, but how would you run the Mac OS on this computer? currently the license agreement says that the Mac OS can only be run on a Mac, unless you're saying to build a hackintosh, but that's illegal and therefor probably not going to catch on to a lot of people.
By open hardware, do you mean that it comes with a fast FPGA and it's up to you to burn your own CPU onto it? Or open CPU? If so, it would be very unlikely to be x86 based, as I don't see x86 going open anytime soon.
Stuff like OpenSPARC is a good idea, but the performance just isn't there. And you'd have to virtualize most OSs on top of it somehow (many [but not all] Linux distros, Windows and OSX are not compiled for SPARC based architecture).
Cool
This computer already exists!I have a not-so-new COMPAQ Presario P4,at 2.8Ghz,that runs everything(W2K,XP,VISTA,LEOPARD,UBUNTU,KNOPPIX,MANDRIVA,HACKINTOSH,etc...)and all hardware works, video, lan, audio,USB.Maybe thats why the MBoard it uses is no longer being produced,,,
Awesome!(personally i love it)...but wheres the profit?Anyone who has the equipment could make it and thered be a lot of competition...
