The clunky way to do this would be to build the laptop like a teleprompter: A half-silvered mirror (or just a pane of glass) at 45 degrees reflecting the horizontal screen below and transmitting the view to the camera behind, all in a big box.
I believe there is some progress already in building the camera into the screen by having sensor pixels interlaced with the display pixels. The image is reconstructed from the array of pixels by interferometry, rather like the reverse of producing a hologram.
It would take lots and lots of processing power, but it could probably be done mostly in parallel with layers of roll-to-roll printed circuitry constructed a wee bit like a fixed-function neural net spanning the back of the display.
