Despite the name, Borderlands 3 is the fourth mainline entry in the acclaimed and irreverent Borderland series. Known for its unique pseudo-rotoscope art style, Borderlands can be described as snarky loot-and-shoot western set in a far-flung dystopian corner of the universe, specifically on the planet Pandora, where mayhem rears its ugly head at every corner. Borderlands 3 returns tapping firmly into that rich tradition.

Stories wise, the player takes on the role of the Vault Hunter and is on a mission to halt the Calypso twins and their nefarious Children of the Vault cult. The RPG elements return with the ability to customize the playable character into four different classes through an expansive skill tree, take on missions, and generally gather loot from downed enemies.

Optimal Hardware Suggestions

Outwardly, the specifications are fairly reasonable, but Gearbox Software may be embellishing the expected performance somewhat. The GPUs sit in the budget bracket and Borderlands 3 looks to run decently on even a GTX 680, but as always, don’t expect to be churning out 60 FPS on ultra settings.

The RAM requirements for the minimum specifications are high, but that is a growing trend among recent releases. If you’re still packing 4GB, an upgrade is well overdue anyway.

Minimum specifications should churn out a decent 30 FPS on low settings and at 1080p, although expect some drops when gunfights get messy.

As for the recommended specifications, 60 FPS at 1440p on ultra settings appears somewhat ambitious, especially in the case of the GTX 1060 where you’d be lucky to land 30 FPS. A happy middle ground is 1080p, ultra settings, and frame rates nearing 40-50.

What Gaming PC Do We Recommend?

It all depends on what Borderlands 3 experience you can handle without throwing your PC through an open window out of sheer frustration.

For 1080p, 60 FPS, ultra settings go for;

  • CPU: Intel Core i7/i9 or AMD Ryzen 7
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz or better
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5700

For 1440p, 60 FPS, ultra settings, we’d recommend;

  • CPU: Intel Core i7/i9 or AMD Ryzen 7
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz or better
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080

If in doubt, check out our recommended $2000 gaming rig. It costs a pretty penny, but guarantees buttery smooth FPS, 1440p or better gaming, and sets you in good stead for the next few years.
