AMD’s highly anticipated Ryzen 7000 series X3D processors are only a few weeks ago. We expect them to hit the markets in February. The X3D CPUs will be equipped with 3D V-cache technology and are expected to offer superior performance to their X and non-X counterparts.

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is going to be the most affordable of the three. The Ryzen 9 7000X3D processors, while amazing in their own right, maybe a bit overkill for gaming, which is why we expect the Ryzen 7 7800X3D to be the go-to option for most gamers. It has the perfect specs to offer high-end gaming without necessarily being overkill.

Ryzen 7 7800X3D – processor specifications

Here are the processor’s specs.

  • Core count: 8 (Multithreading enabled)
  • Thread count: 16
  • Boost clock: 5GHz
  • L2 cache: 8MB – 1MB per core
  • L3 cache: 96 MB – shared
  • TDP: 120 watts
  • iGPU: Radeon Graphics
  • Socket: AM5

How good is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D for gaming?

According to the specs above and certain benchmarks AMD shared with us at CES 2023, we believe the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is going to be a great gaming processor. It will pair up nicely with a high-end Graphics Card such as a 4080 to deliver top-notch gaming performance.

According to AMD’s report, the 7800X3D outperforms its predecessor, the 5800X3D by a margin of 15%. That’s huge. If you didn’t already know, the 5800X3D is last-gen (Zen 3) hardware, but can still compete with the monstrous GPUs of this generation in gaming framerate, purely due to the 3D Vcache it’s equipped with.

A 15% performance increase over what is currently one of the best gaming processors out there is going to place the Ryzen 7 7800X3D firmly at the very top of the list for gaming CPUs

Here’s what makes the 7800X3D such a good gaming processor.

High boost clock

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D has a 5GHz boost clock. A CPU’s boost clock influences its single-thread performance, which, in turn, determines how well the CPU is able to run games.

A 5GHz boost clock is excellent and will deliver top-notch gaming performance.

Now, it is worth mentioning that the 7800X3D does have a slightly lower boost clock than the 7700X (We don’t have a 7800X). That’s because 3D V-cache is temperature sensitive, so the new X3D processor can’t afford to run hot.

Nevertheless, 5GHz is still great and in the high-end territory.

3D V-cache technology

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D comes equipped with AMD’s game-changing 3D V-cache technology. It essentially involves stacking L3 cache chips vertically on top of each other and reducing the processor height to compensate.

The end result is much more L3 cache being available to the processor. This extra L3 cache shines in gaming, although it doesn’t do too much for the processor in productivity work.

Excellent thermal performance

This doesn’t directly influence performance, but the 7800X3D has great thermals. It has a TDP of 120 watts, which is a cut down to the 170-watt TDP we saw the 7000X CPUs bring to the table.

While 120 watts is far above the 65-watt TDP we’re so used to seeing in processors, it’s much lower than the 200 and 300-watt TDPs currently featured by Intel’s top CPUs.
