The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the highly anticipated successor to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. At its time, the 5800X3D was the best gaming CPU in the world. But is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D good for streaming?

The new Ryzen 7 features the same 3D V-cache technology that allowed its predecessor to perform so well in gaming.

L3 cache units are stacked on top of the CPU die vertically, allowing for never-before-seen amounts of cache to become available to the processor. 

We know that the extra cache is great for gaming, but can we say the same for streaming? Let’s find out. 

Ryzen 7 7800X3D: Specifications

First, the processor’s base specs:

  • Core count: 8 (Multithreading enabled)
  • Thread count: 16
  • Boost clock: 5GHz
  • L2 cache: 8MB – 1MB per core
  • L3 cache: 96 MB – shared
  • TDP: 120 watts
  • iGPU: Radeon Graphics
  • Socket: AM5

All standard stuff, except the extraordinary 96 MBs of L3 shared cache this CPU has. For reference, the Ryzen 7 7700X – a Raphael processor the upcoming 7800X3D is often compared to – has only 32MBs of memory. 

The 7800X3D also has a moderate 120-watt TDP. That’s not the best we’ve seen, with some modern CPUs still using up only a modest 65 watts of power. But it’s far better than the power-hungry 170-watt CPUs we saw AMD release in Q4 2022. 

Overall, I think the Ryzen 7 7800X3D looks pretty solid. 

Will the Ryzen 7 7800X3D be good for streaming?

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is a solid processor for streamers looking to equip their AM5 system with V-cache. Here’s why. 

Stream games on high FPS

3D V-cache provides the most benefit to activities that involve a lot of randomnesses.

The prime example of such an activity is gaming, where the processor can never know what you, the player, will do next.

And hence, it benefits greatly from being able to hold more data closer to its core in the shared L3 V cache. 

What’s important to understand here is that streaming and gaming performance are closely tied together. You need a processor that can run your games on high FPS to give your stream viewers the best experience. 

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D will do that perfectly. According to AMD at CES 2023, the new Ryzen 7 is expected to provide 15% more frame rate performance than the 5800X3D, which was (and still is) a phenomenal Zen 3 processor. 

Multicore performance

A secondary aspect that has to be considered for streaming is multicore performance. Streaming involves a lot of encoding and decoding, processes that can utilize multiple threads effectively. 

Admittedly, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D doesn’t have the most threads we’ve seen in a modern CPU.

It has 16 threads, which is pretty good by objective standards but pales in comparison to most of AMD’s other Zen 4 CPUs. 

Fortunately, 16 threads are plenty for streaming. While an extra few threads would undoubtedly be beneficial for even more multitasking potential and content creation, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D will be able to run and stream your games at high FPS perfectly fine. 

So, while the CPU is designed to serve gamers as its primary audience, it can easily take on the extra workload presented by streaming too. 

Final thoughts

We don’t know what the CPU will be retailing at, which is a major factor to consider when discussing how good of an option it is. 

Based on its specs and the data presented to us by AMD at CES 2023, though, it looks like it’ll be a top option for streamers who want a high-end system but don’t quite want to go all out with the Ryzen 9 X3D CPUs
