Ryzen 7000 series APU? Will there be a Ryzen G series CPU? AMD released its AMD 7000 series CPUs into the world on September 27th 2022. The release was highly anticipated, however, something was missing. That missing factor was the Ryzen 7 7800X, where is it? and why is it missing from the Zen 4 line-up when it’s been included for literally generations?

The AMD G series has gained a reputation for itself as one of the best APU series’ around, but is AMD really ready to pack that in? AMD Ryzen 7000 series and AM5 as a platform bring a plethora of new features and performance increases. But that’s not all, AMD has made some pretty fundamental changes to the Ryzen 7000 series CPUs.

Ryzen 7000 series APUs

You might have taken a look at the recent AMD event, or the latest Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 series CPU lineup and thought to yourself “where’s the G-series APUs?”. Well, you’re not alone. Many people are still wondering the same thing.

As it turns out, every single Ryzen 7000 series CPU will have an iGPU. So gone are the days of needing a “G-series” APU to bring integrated graphics to the table. All four Zen 4 CPUs from the 7950X right down to the 7600X contain an iGPU.

This new iGPU contains 2 CUs or Compute Units, meaning it’s essentially a two-core GPU. The architecture of the new iGPU is based on RDNA 2 and is pretty strong in the way of performance for a 2 CU iGPU.

Ryzen 7000 series iGPU performance

We tested the 7000 series iGPU in-house and determined that it was pretty good for a 2 CU iGPU. We hope that AMD puts some resources into making a dedicated APU designed for gaming.

Both the 7600X and the 7900X contain the same iGPU so funnily enough, they perform the exact same. Previously, WccfTech reported on the iGPU contained within the Ryzen 7000 series CPUs. These results specifically came from the Ryzen 9 7950X.

The iGPU inside the Ryzen 9 7950X contains two compute units (2 cores) based on the RDNA2 GPU architecture, totaling 128 stream processors. Those cores have a base frequency of 400MHz and a maximum frequency of around 2200MHz.

Together all this amounts to around 563 GFLOPs of computing power, just higher than that of the Nintendo Switch, which offers around 500 GFLOPs

In the Geekbench 5 OpenCL benchmark, the iGPU inside the 7950X named “GFX1036” scored 8,210 points. For comparison, Vega 8, the integrated chip with eight compute units only scores around 8,500 points in the same benchmark. Making the new iGPUs seriously impressive.

The 700 series iGPU does fall behind Intel’s UHD 770 graphics found in both the Alder Lake and Raptor Lake CPUs by a significant margin. Intel UHD 770 graphics scored around 9,500 points.

Although you may think AMD’s 7000 series iGPUs do incredibly well considering there are only two compute units. AMD stated that the iGPUs inside the new Ryzen 7000 series CPUs were not made for gaming. They were merely designed to give users a display output.

Will there be a G series Ryzen 7000 series CPU?

Good question. Whilst the current 7000 series CPU lineup does not include a G series CPU, we don’t think that alone rules out the possibility of one appearing in the future.

After all, the Ryzen 7 5700G did not release until almost a year after the original 5000 series CPUs.

AMD may very well scrap the G series this time around considering all four of the original 7000 series CPUs contain an iGPU. Then AMD released 3D V-cache enabled 7000 series CPUs early on in 2024, featuring iGPUs of their own. Nothing quite as dedicated as a G series processor though.

Whilst each CPU currently contains an iGPU, AMD is on record stating that the iGPUs are currently not designed for gaming and are currently only meant for display outputs. We don’t know about you, but we think that’s a lot of power to put behind just driving a display.

The 5600G and 5700G were excellent APUs and were very well received, regarded very highly for their performance and value for money.

We think AMD will release a G series 7000 CPU, and it’s gonna blow every APU out of the water. AMD has a mean foundation set to do so, with the iGPU currently included in Zen 4 CPUs outperforming a mobile gaming platform. And it’s doing so on two “compute units” without even trying.

AMD Ryzen 7000 X3D series steals the show

It’s looking like the Ryzen 7000 X3D series has stolen the show at CES 2023, There was no mention whatsoever of a G-series Ryzen 7000 CPU. That’s not to say that there won’t be one, we just haven’t seen it yet.

For now, though, the iGPUs inside the new Ryzen 7000 X3D series are the same as in the standard 7000 series CPUs. This indirectly indicates that there is no development happening on the iGPU front as of yet. If there is, then AMD is very quiet about it.

AMD Ryzen 7000 G series FAQs

Have AMD announced any APUs for the 7000 series?

Not quite yet. There has been some speculation here and there that AMD are lining up an announcement for Ryzen 7000 series APUs, but this has yet to come to fruition.

Does Ryzen 7000 series have integrated RDNA graphics?

The Ryzen 7000 series CPUs all have an iGPU on board which is based on AMD’s RDNA 2 GPU architecture, albeit just using two compute units.

We hope to see more dedicated APUs in the near future which feature a larger number of compute units, or even offer their latest RDNA 3 architecture.

Final word

Whether or not AMD decides to release a G series CPU within the AMD 7000 CPU line-up, we’re sure the CPUs will blow us away. AMD has definitely laid the foundation to dominate in the APU space this generation.

The current iGPU situation seems too well set up to be a coincidence, we feel like it’s destined for greater things. And there’s no way AMD put so much power into driving displays exclusively. It’s like firing up a 3.0L Inline 6 Toyota Supra to run your grandma up the road.

We think AMD is going to be putting the Supra to much better use later down the road. If you ask us, we’d tell you to expect a G series at some point in the AMD 7000 series life cycle. As to what specifications we’d see in a G series, we have no clue.

This is all just speculation, we know nothing for sure. What do you think? we hope you enjoyed this Ryzen 7000 series APU opinion piece.
