During AMD’s CES 2023 keynote presentation, CEO Dr. Lisa Su revealed that AMD’s new Ryzen 7040 mobile chips will be bathed in secret AI sauce, she didn’t say those words exactly, she was very professional. But what exactly is Ryzen AI?

AI is on the rise with seemingly every technology manufacturer trying to integrate AI or automatic components into our day-to-day lives. Mostly, with the goal of making our lives easier. AMD has decided to hop on the AI-driven bandwagon and announced Ryzen AI integration for select chips at CES 2023.

Ryzen AI is said to be at the forefront of AMD Ryzen CPU technology in upcoming CPUs, but what is it going to be doing for you?

What is Ryzen AI?

Ryzen AI isn’t some stand-alone piece of software, it’s an AI package baked into the brand-new Ryzen 7040 mobile CPU. The CPUs themselves have already piqued our interest, with AMD claiming they’re up to 30% faster than Apple M1 chips and 45% faster than Intel equivalents.

The AI element comes from the built-in AI engine that is based on a configurable accelerator that was adapted from AMD’s acquisition of Xilinx, another semiconductor manufacturer.

the dedicated on-chip AI engine is capable of up to 12 trillion AI operations per second. built onto a chip that’s based on the tiny 4nm process technology, whilst cramming up to 25 billion transistors all onto the same chip. That’s almost twice as many as AMD’s 6000 series mobile CPUs.

We don’t expect to be seeing this technology embedded into any desktop CPUs just yet, but who knows what the future holds for future Ryzen desktop CPUs. Maybe we’ll see a Ryzen AI appearance in 9000 series Ryzen CPUs.

What is Ryzen AI used for?

AI can be used for basically anything. That’s the beauty of it. AMD did showcase an example of how Ryzen AI will be shaping the world as we know it, with the help of Panos Panay, Microsoft’s EVP.

Panay explained that AMD had been at the forefront of AI technology with Ryzen and that Microsoft can now run huge simulated models that require massively powerful GPUs more efficiently on AMD devices, thanks to Ryzen AI.

So Ryzen AI is already helping by intelligently and dynamically working with hardware to create efficiencies in model rendering, something that AI has been used for already for some time.

How does that help you? A standard user.

Well Panay and Su, went on to explain that the AI-based Ryzen 7040 processors will be paired with Windows 11 operating systems in the future. Windows will now have AI integration on select devices, with the goal of cultivating a better, easier user experience on Windows 11. Just like Cortana, only not a voice assistant, and actually good.

Another example given was dynamic eye tracking, background blurring, and audio isolation using select video conferencing applications. A big help to those who prefer, or have no choice but to work from home.

As well as all this, the Ai integrated Ryzen 7040 chip is said to enable a 30-hour video playback battery life on average, whilst sacrificing basically 0 performance.

Final word

That’s about all that was given during AMD’s CES 2023 keynote presentation, We’re really looking forward to seeing how far Ryzen AI goes, and what it could mean for the future of AMD processors. We will update you as soon as we know more about Ryzen AI.

The world is changing, our lives are getting easier and easier thanks to AI. And now that AMD has decided to develop its’s own AI hardware, we’re going to start to see more AI within select laptops and maybe desktop PCs in the future on the AMD platform.
