AMD will be releasing the X3D variants of their Ryzen 7000 series processors on February 28th. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D is the strongest of the lot and will also likely be the company’s next flagship processor. Today, we’re talking about the best motherboard for AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D.

The Ryzen 9 7950X3D

We’re expecting great things from the Ryzen 9 7950X3D. Based on its specs and some benchmarks AMD released at CES 2023, it seems to be a very capable processor, especially for gaming.

To get the most out of the 7950X3D, you’ll need to pair it up with a high-end motherboard.

Compared to the flashy PC components such as the CPU and GPU, motherboards aren’t paid much attention to. That’s a shame because a good motherboard can do wonders for your system.

Higher-quality motherboards provide the CPU with cleaner power. They also have better cooling, more slots for external devices, higher audio quality, better connectivity, and much more.

Choosing a motherboard for the 7950X3D

Here’s what goes into choosing a motherboard for a particular processor.

Socket

You want to make sure your motherboard and processor are compatible with each other. Like all 7000 processors, the upcoming Ryzen 9 7950X will run on the new AM5 socket. Older AM4 motherboards won’t work with the 7950X3D.

Having to buy a new motherboard to use the 7950X3D will present an extra one-time cost, but you’d have to make the jump to the new platform sooner and later anyways. Plus, and as we’ll soon see, AM5 motherboards have a ton of new and improved features that make the jump worth it.

Chipset

AM5 motherboards are currently available in the following chipsets.

  • B650
  • B650E
  • X670
  • X670E

The B650 are the most basic boards. The X670 are the high-end boards, whereas the X670E chipset boards are the finest the AM5 platform has to offer.

Because the Ryzen 9 7950X is a flagship processor, it makes the most sense to pair it up with an X670E chipset board or an X670 at the very least.

Form Factor

Motherboards are available in several forms factors. Before getting one, do check that your PC case is compatible with it. A larger EATX motherboard, for example, won’t fit in a MicroATX PC case.

If the case size isn’t a concern, I recommend going with the EATX form factor. EATX boards are the largest, but they also have the most features.

The motherboard’s high-quality VRMs are cooled by a large heatsink and supply clean power to the processor with a 20+2 phase power delivery system.

As you would expect from an X670E motherboard, the Crosshair Extreme has exceptional support for overclocking.

Now, it’s probably not the best idea to overclock an X3D processor due to the temperature sensitivity of V-cache, but the increased cooling made available to your processor by the board’s optimal thermal design will help keep temperatures low. The lower temperatures help you make the most out of AMD’s Precision Boost Overdrive technology, which is very similar to overclocking.

Here’s some more on whether or not you can overclock the Ryzen 9 7950X3D.

The Crosshair Extreme supports PCIe 5.0 connectivity in its two x16 slots and two M.2 slots. You also get two USB4 Type C ports for faster-than-ever I/O transfer rates and support for the latest high-speed DDR5 memory.

The board also has built-in WiFi 6E, which supports internet transfer speeds upwards of 1Gbps which is perfect for gamers and content creators alike.
