The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is right around the corner, with an expected release date of April 6th. CPUs have become much more power-hungry lately, though, so older power supplies might not cut it. Let’s find out what the best PSU for AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D is based on how much power it consumes.

How much power does the Ryzen 7 7800X3D need?

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D has a moderate TDP of 120 watts. Now, that’s higher than the 65-watt default TDPs we’d become so used to seeing, but I say reasonable because other high-end CPUs these days have much higher TDPs. The Ryzen 7 7700X, for example, has a 170-watt TDP.

So AMD has actually managed to cut the power consumption here by some 50 watts, resulting in the 7800X3D being a surprisingly power-efficient processor.

With a 120-watt CPU, you likely won’t need to shell out on an over-the-top PSU

It’s worth mentioning that the CPU TDP is far less impactful on a system’s total power draw than the GPU TDP. In other words, the GPU you choose to pair the 7800X3D up with will determine to a greater degree what PSU you should go with.

With a 16-thread 7800X3D, you will likely go with one of the high-end GPUs, but maybe not the current flagships. Most GPUs that would make a suitable pairing will have a TDP of between 200 to 400 watts, and this is something we’ve considered in our selection of the best PSU for 7800X3D.

Factors to consider when choosing a PSU

Before I explain to you what our top pick is, here’s a bit about what goes into choosing a PSU for any particular setup.

Wattage

This one is pretty self-explanatory. A PSU’s wattage rating indicates how much maximum power it’s able to supply the system.

You want your PSU to have the ability to supply 20 to 30% more power than your system will consume under max load. For example, if your PC build has a theoretical maximum power consumption of 500 watts, a 650-watt PSU would be perfect.

Efficiency

PSUs have various efficiency ratings; you can learn more about them in our dedicated guide. But in essence, the better a PSU’s efficiency rating, the less power it wastes, the cooler it operates, and the less noise it makes.

80+ Bronze is considered the absolute minimum you should go for these days.

Modularity

PSUs can be modular, semi-modular, or non-modular.

A modular PSU will allow you to detach wires from the power brick and keep only the needed ones. This makes for easier cable management and less internal clutter and is certainly nice to have.

Power connectors are fixed to the brick in non-modular supplies, meaning you’re stuck with what you’ve got.

After considering the power usage of a 7800X3D and of the components such a processor is likely to be paired with, we’ve selected the Seasonic Prime TX-850 as the top pick for this CPU.

Seasonic Prime TX-850

The Seasonic Prime TX-850 is an 850-watt power supply, which is plenty to power a computer with a 7800X3D, even if you pair the processor up with top-tier GPUs such as those from the RTX 4000 and RX 7000 series.

Fully modular

Perhaps what stands out most about the TX-850 is its 80+ Titanium efficiency certification, which translates to a real-time efficiency of 90 to 94% depending on the load. The high efficiency means the PSU stays cool during operation and doesn’t make a lot of noise.

The only downside to the TX-850 is its rather high cost. But that’s somewhat justified by the use of the high-quality materials this PSU is made up with. The TX-850 comes out of the box with a 12-year warranty, which is higher than most manufacturers are prepared to offer.

Overall, the TX-850 is an excellent power supply – and one that’s especially suitable for use with a 7800X3D as it supplies just the right amount of power for the said processor.
