What to look for when choosing RAM for a Ryzen processor

Here are the primary factors you want to consider when choosing RAM for a processor – in this case, the Ryzen 9 7900X3D.

Compatibility

Before anything else, it’s important you ensure that the RAM you’re looking to get is compatible with your CPU. The Ryzen 9 7900X3D is a Zen 4 processor that is compatible with only the latest DDR5 RAM. That means you can’t pair it up with DDR4 memory, unfortunately, and you’ll have to buy the latest generation if you’re interested in running this processor.

On the bright side, you get record data clock speeds and data transfer rates, making the upgrade well worth your money.

RAM speed

We next have to consider the RAM speed. DDR5 memory is available in speeds ranging from 4400 to 7600MHz. Of course, with a processor as powerful as the 7900X3D, it makes the most sense to go with RAM that’s able to perform at the higher end of this range.

AMD recommends pairing Ryzen 7000 series processors up with 6000MHz RAM, and we find this recommendation to be fair, for the most part. Practically speaking, you can go down to 5200MHz without losing much performance.

For the Ryzen 9 7900X3D, we’re recommending you stick to 6000MHz and above, though, to help you extract all the performance this powerful processor has to offer.

Latency timings

Another vitally important yet often neglected RAM spec is latency, usually denoted by CL or CAS. In other words, how long it takes for your RAM stick to fetch data from its memory and deliver it to the processor once requested to do so?

You want your RAM to have minimal latency so that your CPU doesn’t have to waste time waiting around for data from the RAM to come in before it can process it.

DDR5 RAM tends to have a CAS latency value of 30 to 40. We want to stick to the lower end of this range for the 7900X3D.

AMD EXPO technology

Lastly, it’s worth getting a RAM kit that supports AMD’s recently introduced EXPO technology, which allows you to overclock and fine-tune your RAM with ease. Faster RAM speeds are pretty important these days, and more so with Ryzen than with Intel’s Core processors.

Ryzen processors consist of two chiplets that communicate with each other through an interface known as infinity fabric, and the speed of their communication is tied directly to the RAM speed. Faster RAM means better CPU performance.

Best RAM for the Ryzen 9 7900X3D

With all of the above in mind, the RAM we’re recommending for the Ryzen 9 7900X3D is the G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB Series.

G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB Series

The G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB Series is a top-of-the-line RAM kit that checks all the boxes we’ve described above.

The high-speed DDR5 memory has a clock speed of 6000MHz, which, as we discussed earlier, is the sweet spot for Ryzen 7000 series processors. The kit includes 2 16GB modules, totaling 32 gigs of RAM for your computer.

32 gigs of RAM is a very healthy amount to have in 2024, whether you’re interested in gaming or workstation productivity.

Additionally, the RAM has a CAS latency of 30, which is top-tier and will offer you a noticeable performance boost over slower-responding memory in most applications.

The G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO features AMD EXPO, so you can overclock the RAM to get even more performance out of it.

Overall, it’s one of if not the best RAMs for Ryzen 7000 series processors, and what we recommend for the 7900X3D in particular due to its powerful specs.
