What to look for in a Black Friday NVMe SSD deal
Even though you’ve chosen to go with an NVMe SSD this Black Friday, there’s still a lot to choose from. Brands of the likes of Samsung, WD, Seagate, and beyond all produce a range of NVMe SSDs, but what’s the difference?
Well, of course, as a storage unit, the capacity is probably going to be the biggest factor to consider. This is not as simple as choosing one with the amount of storage you expect to fill up, however. NVMe SSDs use a portion of their capacity for cache purposes. This means that once you start to fill up your SSD to 80% and beyond, it will have less space available for caching duties and so will slow down. That’s why it’s important to go with an SSD that has a good chunk more space than you expect to use.
Even though NVMe is the fastest in SSD technology, some outperform others. At the top of the tree, we see the Crucial T700, with sequential read speeds of 12,400 MB/s, with the Samsung 990 PRO the fastest M.2 SSD (previous generation). In short, have a read of the specs when picking up an NVMe SSD deal this Black Friday. Just the ‘NVMe’ tag will not be enough for you to know exactly picking up.
