Crypto is one of the more team play-oriented recon legends in the game. He was introduced in Season 3 and has seen a number of changes over the years. Crypto offers a lot of utility to his team but using his drone makes him vulnerable, which means you need to have teammates play around you.

Here’s a breakdown of the character and how to become an effective Crypto player.

Crypto Lore

Crypto, aka Tae Joon Park, specializes in secrets. A brilliant hacker and encryption expert, he uses aerial drones to spy on his opponents.

An orphan abandoned at a young age, Tae Joon escaped a life of squalor by becoming a computer engineer for the Mercenary Syndicate, along with his foster sister, Mila Alexander. Tae Joon and Mila stumble on an algorithm hidden away in the Games’ own computer systems capable of predicting the result of any Apex Games match.

That caught the attention of the wrong people – the next day, Mila disappears. Tae Joon is forced into hiding after he being framed for her murder. He’s now joined the Games to clear his name.

Apex Legends – Crypto’s Abilities

Apex Legends Crypto Hero Guide

Crypto is a Recon legend and shares the same perks as Seer, Valkyrie, Pathfinder, and Bloodhound. The recon passive allows you to access the 12 survey beacons available on the map in any given match to determine the next circle location. Crypto unique twist is that he scan beacons using his drone.

Crypto and his teammates see what his Surveillance Drone detects up to a 30 meter away. The drone highlights doors, supply bins, care packages, traps, and enemies in a direct and uninterrupted line of sight. Enemies are more noticeably marked with a triangle. Enemies are also alerted by a ‘DRONE DETECTED’ message when tracked up by Crypto’s drone.

Tactical – Surveillance Drone

Crypto’s surveillance drone flies around and remotely interacts with survey beacons, respawn beacons, and ally banner cards. The drone has a 40-second cooldown once destroyed.

Crypto’s drone can be very complicated to use, so here is a full breakdown of how the drone works. Pressing the tactical button launches the drone a few meters away from Crypto. Holding the tactical button will cause Crypto to go into drone view immediately. Throwing the drone at a wall turns the drone around to face Crypto.

The drone can be deployed and flown up to 200 meters away from Crypto. If the drone is over 240 meters away from Crypto, it’s automatically recalled. Players can aim down sights to look around while flying the drone. The drone can also be left midair and Crypto can exit the camera view at any time. Crypto is left stationary while piloting the drone. Taking damage while in drone view forces Crypto out of the camera view.

Crypto can recall the drone at any time, but not when reviving a teammate. Recalling during a revive interrupts the revive. The drone can, however, be recalled without interruption when shooting, healing, or when knocked down. The recall takes around two seconds.

Crypto’s Drone has 50 HP and players should be careful when near enemies as it’s easily destroyed. Players can use the drone to open doors, supply bins, care packages, and vaults, but also scan survey beacons, and respawn allies. It can also grab player respawn banners from death boxes. Staying inside the surveillance mode automatically reloads Crypto’s weapons.

Ultimate – Drone EMP

Crypto’s ultimate allows you to charge up an EMP from your drone. The blast deals 50 shield damage, slows players, and destroys traps. The ultimate takes 3 seconds to charge before detonating. The drone can be destroyed before detonation, canceling it. The ultimate doesn’t damage allies (Crypto himself can be damaged) but slows them down.

Apex Legends Crypto Tips

Here are some tips to help you master Crypto and make team fight-winning plays:

Use EMP From Cover

Look for objects that you can place your drone behind to successfully pull off an EMP. If your drone gets destroyed in endgame fights, you won’t be able to use it again for 40 seconds, potentially costing you the game.

Team Up With Movement Legends

Coordinate pushes with Crypto’s EMP by setting up Wraith portals, Ash’s teleport, zip lines, and other movement abilities. Use your ultimate and push with your teammates to quickly close gaps.

Grab Respawn Banners Using Your Tactical

If you are losing a fight and know you can’t do anything to help your teammates, it’s best to get away and use your tactical later to grab enemy banners. Your drone travels fast and you can even wait before grabbing ally banners, if necessary, to avoid being pushed by enemies.

Put Your Drone on Standby in Chokes

Hide your drone in trees or place it in sneaky positions to keep an eye on enemies that might get close to you. You’ll be alerted when enemies are in your drone’s range.

Hack Displays on the Map

Point your drone at the huge displays on the map to highlight the champion squad and kill leader. Looking at them with your drone also shows you how many hostile squads are nearby. It is a great idea to use the ability every time you enter a new area.
