Is Apex Legends on Nintendo Switch?

After the game’s phenomenal run on PC and consoles, it was time to test it on a different platform. Hence, just a day after the game’s season 8 patch launch, Apex legends was announced to release on Nintendo Switch on March 9, 2021.

The community celebrated the ability to play the game on a smaller screen, and everyone desperately waited for the release. But alas, things weren’t looking so pretty when the game was finally released.

When was Apex Legends Released?

American game development studio Respawn Entertainment released Apex for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on February 4, 2019.

The fledgling game saw rapid success as it surpassed 25 million players after just one week of its release. It was also the most downloaded free-to-play game on the PS4 in 2019. Not only that, but the game made over $92 million in the first month, according to multiple sources.

It’s safe to say that the game was a huge success.

What issues did Apex Legends face on Switch?

After the highly coveted game came out on Switch, players rallied to download it. But almost immediately recognized a host of performance issues that plagued the game.

Due to the Switch’s low processing power and relatively weaker hardware, the game was capped at 720p in docked and 560p in handheld modes, respectively. This made the visuals seem a lot blurry as compared to other consoles. Many fans said they couldn’t see the enemies clearly, and sometimes they seemed to pop out of nowhere.

Although the game was locked at 30 fps on Switch, it was pretty easy to see that the frame rate dropped to 10-20 fps many times. With even higher dips during fast-paced gunfights. This wasn’t the optimal experience for a game that punishes even the slightest of errors.

In addition, the default settings made critical tasks like aiming and shooting relatively challenging to execute. A game admired for its fast-paced, abrupt movements couldn’t be enjoyed with framerate dips and shooting difficulties.

Apex Legends’ Crossplay Status on Switch

The cross-play option was On by default on Apex. Now, considering all of the issues we’ve listed, it’s not too difficult to imagine the plethora of problems they created for Switch players competing with console or high-end PC gamers, usually coming in at 60 fps or more.

Therefore, the majority of players were at a consensus that crossplay should be turned off while playing on Switch.

Overall, the Switch version of Apex did suffer a lot of issues initially, but some of the problems were later fixed in subsequent patches. Still, the experience on Switch does not compete with other mainstream gaming platforms.
