Valkyrie is one of the meta-defining characters in Apex Legends, favored by players for her recon abilities, ability to gain high ground and redeploy her team to rotate safely to any part of a map.

Here’s everything you need to know to master Valkyrie.

Valkyrie Lore

Valkyrie, aka Kairi Imahara, isn’t above greasing palms and bending the law but at heart, she is one of the good guys in the world of Apex Legends. When she was a child, she stole her father’s “Viper” Titan, wanting to be just like him when she grew up. The next day, he left on a mission to never return after being killed by Titanfall 2 protogonist Jack Cooper.

Valkyrie followed in his footsteps and became a pilot. Her personal life, however, was anything but easy. During the day, she smuggled precious cargo, and drank with the outlaws and mercs in the bars at night. Although she had her ladies, her liquor, and her love of the sky, she was still obsessed with finding the man who’d put her father in harm’s way: his commander, Kuben Blisk.

Using the intact flight core from Viper’s Northstar, she built a sleek new jetpack that honored her father’s memory and joined the Apex Games.

Apex Legends Valkyrie’s Abilities

Apex Legends Valkyrie Hero Guide

Valkyrie is a Recon legend and shares the same perks as Seer, Valkyrie, Pathfinder, and Bloodhound. The recon passive allows you to access the 12 survey beacons available on the map in any given match to determine the next circle location.

Passive – VTOL JETS

Press the jump key while in the air to engage the jetpack. You can switch between hold and toggle mode in the options menu. The ability has no cooldown but has a charge meter that consumes a percentage of a visible bar on your HUD. Activating the VTOL Jets consumes about 12.5% of total fuel and the maximum duration is 7 seconds. Fuel will begin to refill after 8 seconds. Refueling the tank takes a maximum of 10 seconds.

While using the Jets, Valkyrie can’t use any weapons but she can use the Missile Swarm ability. Once the Jets are released, there’ a 1-second delay before she can use her weapons.

Passive – Jet Fighter HUD

Valkyrie is one of the few legends that has multiple passive abilities. Her Jet Fighter HUD activates when skydiving or using her Ultimate ability. All enemies within 250 meters are marked as long as they are in direct line of sight. The champion is marked with “CH” and the kill leader will be marked with “KL”.

Enemies are not alerted when scanned by Valkyrie. Teammates attached to Valkyrie also gain tactical information from her passive and can see the enemies marked on their screens.

Tactical – Missile Swarm

This ability fires a swarm of mini-rockets that damage and disorient the enemy on a 30-second cooldown. Launches 12 missiles in a 4×3 array, dealing damage and stunning enemies. If a Legend gets hit, the first missile deals 25 damage and every subsequent missile deals 3.

The ability need some vertical clearance (12 meters) to fire and the maximum distance the rockets can travel is 100 meters. The crosshair aligns with the lowest row of rockets and players should align their ability accordingly.

Ultimate – Skyward Dive

Upon usage, Valkyrie enters a setup animation that charges up over 2 seconds, after which she can press Fire to launch up to 180 meters into the air in about seven seconds to enter a skydive. Her ultimate is similar to using a Jump Tower and her teammates can join the flight.

The ability can be canceled after readying up, but doing so incurs a 25% ultimate charge penalty. While in pre-launch, using ping marks Valkyrie for her squad and display a “Let’s fly!” notification in the kill feed. The ability requires a vertical clearance to activate.

Apex Legends Valkyrie Tips

Here are some tips to help you master the queen of the skies:

Use Your Ultimate For Team Rotations

Don’t be selfish with your ultimate; rotate with your team. However, in some cases, it can be worthwhile to escape a fight to salvage your ranked points and come back for the respawn banners later.

Conserve Your Fuel

Don’t spam your jump button to fly around and move faster. Use your fuel judiciously as one wrong move could put you in a spot where you can’t escape enemy fire.

The jetpack also creates a lot of noise and alerts nearby enemies of your location. You’re also an easy target when flying in a straight line as you’re much slower. It’s a bad idea to continuously spend your fuel to fly as good players will shoot you out of the sky immediately.

Use Your Tactical Mid Combat

Your Missile Swarm can stun enemies in crucial moments during fights. If you deal significant damage to someone and they try to escape, use your tactical to stun the enemy and finish them off before they can heal.

Cushion Your Landings

When you’re high in the sky, stop your flight with a little fuel left to cushion your landing and not get stunned when you hit the ground. This can be very important during fights if you land right in front of enemies.
