Who is Auntie Ethel in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Auntie Ethel is a powerful Hag and Fey creature and a Level 5 NPC and boss you will meet in Baldur’s Gate 3. You will find her during Act 1 in the Overgrown Tunnel. To get to her, make your way to the Sunlit Wetlands and go to the Riverside Teahouse.

How to Beat Auntie Ethel in Baldur’s Gate 3

When you first meet Auntie, she will be disguised as a human and act as a trader. You can purchase various items such as Water or healing potions during this. Here, you will have a quest to get help from Auntie Ethel, during which she will bargain with you to remove your tadpole parasite, of course, for a price

If you do go through with this deal, she will take your eye, and you will earn the Paid the Price debuff; this is a permanent debuff. Of course, the Hag cannot remove your parasite problem due to the shadow magic called Netherese. However, you will find yourself without an eye and unable to perform Critical Hits and Disadvantages on Perception Checks.

Best methods to beat Auntie Ethel in Baldur’s Gate 3

Once you realize you’ve been duped by the Hag, naturally, a fight will break out. However, once she has been wounded, she will run away. You must then go to Ethel’s lair, the Ancient Abode. Here, you will find Mayrina in a cage. Once you initiate the fight, the Hag will throw a bottle at Mayrina’s cage, which will light on fire. To prevent the cage from burning, use Create Water spell, water bottles, or barrels to extinguish the fire.

However, after this, Ethel will turn invisible and create three illusions of herself. To combat this, use Magic Missile or Witch Bolt. This ability will allow you to make 3 darts of magical force and use this ability on all three clones to reveal the Hag. Once you have halved her HP, she will clone herself again; you can repeat the above attack. You can also use AoE attacks such as Burning Hands or Pin Down. Any damage to the clones will reveal where Ethel is.

Additionally, you can also cast Silence to prevent her from casting magic and Grease to keep her in one place. Another spell you can utilize the the Conjuration spell Ensnaring Strike. Ensnaref creatures will take 1d6 Piercing at the start of each turn. If you have a Ranger, you can perform this spell.

However, the next time Ethel does this, she will pull Mayrina from her cage and use an illusion spell to disguise herself as Mayrina. She will then port Mayrina to her previous location and move to a new one. You can also see a faint illusion effect on the fake Mayrina. This one is the real Ethel. Once you defeat Auntie Ethel, you will free Mayrina.

A door to the Acrid Workshop will open once you have dealt with Aunite Ethel and saved Mayrina. Here, you can find various items and a wand called Bitter Divorce wand.

How to get to Ethel’s Lair in Baldur’s Gate 3

Before you go to Ethel’s Lair, you will face a few challenges and enemies. Once Auntie Ethel runs away, you must follow her down the fireplace.

After you have made your way into the fireplace, you will have entered the Overgrown Tunnel cave. Here, you will meet a few captured prisoners and Mayrina, a pregnant young girl. After this, you must make your way to the Gnarled Door

To enter the heart of Auntie Ethel’s Lair, you must wear the Whispering Mask helmet. It will be on a table to the right of the door. Once you have made your way inside, go right and head toward the waterfall and jump across to make it to the next side. You will then be met with gas fumes. To get over them, use Misty Step to get over the pit.
