The class system has been a staple of the Battlefield series since it started, giving players four different classes to choose from when selecting their character and loadout. Over the years, this enduring element has seen a few changes, but with Battlefield 2042 just over the horizon, it seems clear that we should expect some pretty sweeping differences coming to the latest game in the series.

Below we’ve listed all of the specialists that will be in the game, as well as the different classes that they technically all fall under. We’ve also included details on how they’ll work and what changes you should expect if you’re a veteran of the series, so you’ll have nothing to fear when the game finally comes out later this year.

Changes to the Class System

Since the dawn of the series, there have mostly been four different classes for you to choose from. Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon, are the four major kits you can choose from at the start of a match, each with its own weapons and special abilities, though they’ve occasionally had different names and focuses. This time, things are a bit different in Battlefield 2042.

Instead of having four different classes to choose from, you instead choose a named specialist, each with different abilities and weapons. These specialists are still put into one of the four categories, but they have subtle differences that make them feel a bit distinct from each other. Below are all the specialists that we currently know about, but there are certainly going to be more on the horizon.

Assault Specialists

Webster Mackay

As an assault specialist, Mackay is adept at helping to control the flow of the battlefield. He comes with a grapplehook ability to aid in moving across the newer massive maps that the game will feature. Presumably, this will help when it comes to flanking an enemy position or even when taking a generally more stealthy approach to attacking the enemy.

We can also assume that Mackay will specialize in assault weapons, and we know for a fact that he comes with a trait called Nimble that makes him move much faster while using iron sights. It’s likely that he’ll mostly fulfill an anti-infantry role since in a fight between a grapplehook and a tank, the tank wins.

Engineer Specialists

Kimble “Irish” Graves

Irish is an engineer specialist, so we can assume that means a lot of technical and support abilities, including the ability to repair vehicles. In this case, we also know that Irish has the Veteran trait, which according to EA “Provides armor, with additional bonuses from downed enemies”, but what exactly the extra bonuses are we’re not 100% sure yet.

As with most previous engineer classes, it seems likely that Irish will mostly be focused on defending against, and directly confronting vehicles and heavy armor units. He also has access to deployable protection that not only protects your squad from light-to-heavy weaponry but also comes with an anti-explosive projectile system too.

Pytor “Boris” Guskovsky

Another engineer specialist, Boris is a Russian operative with a similar focus to Irish in many ways. Once again, he’s likely to be able to repair vehicles and will focus primarily on the ability to take down enemy armor while keeping his own team’s vehicles up and running.

His trait and special ability both tie into each other as well. For a special ability, Boris can deploy the SG-36 Sentry System, an automated turret that engages enemies within a certain radius. For a trait, Boris has Sentry Operator, a skill that allows him to see any enemies that his turret has already tagged, making it a great way to keep tabs on enemies who are already alerted to your defenses.

Recon Specialists

Wikus “Casper” Van Daele

With a name like Wikus Van Daele, you can probably tell that Casper is from South Africa. That aside, as the only recon specialist we know about right now, Casper is going to be your main pick if you’re into taking a more stealthy sniper approach, rather than the balls-to-the-wall methods most other specialists will be using.

Casper’s special ability allows him to deploy the OV-P Recon Drone, a flying drone that can be used to scout out the area, lock onto targets, and even deploy EMP blasts to ruin an enemy’s day. His trait is Movement Sensor, which means that any moving enemy nearby will be picked up on his radar, both when he’s on his own as well as when he’s piloting his special drone. Incredibly useful for a sniper.

Support Specialists

Maria Falck

The final specialist we know about, and the only female operative right now, is Maria Falck, a support specialist who is mostly focused on acting as a medic for your team. Her abilities focus primarily on healing, while she carries weapons to defend herself they’re not much on their own so she’ll certainly need a squad backing her up when things get heavy.

Her trait is Combat Medic, allowing her to return downed teammates to full health when reviving instead of the more paltry healing others can provide. She also carries Syrette Pistol as her special ability, allowing her to heal teammates from a distance, a useful tactic for a specialist with less of a combat focus who doesn’t want to get into the thick of it.

The Final Word

And there you have it, all of the specialists coming to Battlefield 2042 that we know about so far. Word on the grapevine is that another 5 specialists will be revealed soon, so make sure to stick around as we’ll update this article as soon as we have more information about future specialists.
