There’s nothing more therapeutic than a first-person shooter. When you’re having a bad day, or you just need to unwind in general, then hopping onto your favorite shooter and letting your enemies have it is one of the best bets to let the stress melt away. Of course, for that to really work you need the most important element: guns. Upcoming shooter Battlefield 2042 might still be shrouded in mystery for many, but we can be sure of one thing: it’s going to have lots of guns.

Thanks to the efforts of a data miner known as ‘Temporyal’, we now know which guns the game will start with, or at least the names of those guns. From that list, we’re able to infer a few different bits of info about the guns that will be on offer, although there are almost certainly going to be some surprises in store for us when the game officially releases or soon later.

Battlefield 2042 Weapons

Here’s a complete list of all the weapons that we know about split up by category, as well as a few details we can gather about each of them.

SMGs

  • PP-19
  • MP9
  • Kriss Vector
  • SMG 45

An interesting spread in terms of SMGs. We’ve got the PP-19, a Russian-made SMG with a very interesting shape for a sub-machine gun, as well as featuring selective fire options so hopefully, those will be present in-game as well. The MP9 is a classic compact machine-pistol SMG that has been featured in plenty of games over the years, but it’s unclear if the one depicted in Battlefield 2042 will be the classic model or one of the newer designs variants such as the MP9-N.

The other two options available are the Kriss Vector and the SMG 45. The Kriss Vector is another SMG with a very distinct shape thanks to the grip having a few parallel diagonal lines. The SMG 45 is a bit of a mystery at this point. It could be talking about the LWRC SMG 45, but it could also just refer to a generic SMG that fires 45 Calibur bullets, an usually large round diameter for a sub-machine gun.

Assault Rifles

  • AK12
  • SCAR MK 17
  • MCX Spear

The assault rifle lineup features some pretty classic inclusions. Even if you’re unfamiliar with guns, you should probably be able to tell that the AK12 is related to the AK-47, probably the world’s most famous gun. It’s very similar in terms of form factor but is also obviously more modernized with a much more slick look to it, being constructed from modern plastic polymers and metal, rather than the more aged wooden look of the more famous weapon.

The SCAR MK 17 is also known as the SCAR-H, is a pretty common assault rifle used by various armies all over the world. It fires standard 7.62x51mm NATO rounds and is a pretty common inclusion on just about any battlefield, although whether or not it will be by 2042 remain to be seen. The final assault rifle on offer here is the MCX Spear, both the most interesting and most fitting weapon of the bunch. It’s currently just an entry from SIG Sauer for the US army’s Next-Gen Weapon Program, so it’s clearly aiming at being the sort of gun that will make sense in the near future. Having said that, we also don’t know much about the real-world gun itself yet.

LMGs

  • MGA SAW-K
  • PKP Pecheneg
  • KAC LWAMG

Moving onto the LMGs Battlefield 2042 will offer, for starters we have MGA SAW-K, an updated and improved version of the SAW M249 with reduced weight, reduced length, and a whole bunch of extra options, including a lot of different caliber options. The PKP Pecheneg is a Russian LMG and is one truly weight behemoth of a weapon. Finally, the KAC LWAMG is a system of weapons, rather than a specific one, that has been around since the 80s. Until we learn more we won’t know what sort of variant this LMG will be.

Designated Marksman Rifles

  • Kel-Tec CMR-30
  • Chukavin SVCH
  • DDM4

For DMR weapons we have the Kel-Tec CMR-30, a .22 magnum carbine that looks like a regular carbine, and a machine pistol that had a baby. It also features an insane amount of customization, so you can probably expect it to slot very well into the new customization system that has been teased for 2042. Meanwhile, the Chuckavin SVCH is a much more standard-looking semi-auto carbine that features plenty of optic choices.

The final marksman rifle option is the DDM4, another name that applies to a variety of different guns from rifles to carbine pistols. Once again, we don’t know all that much until we’re sure of exactly which DDM4 is being talked about here, though for our money it’s probably one of the DDM4v7 rifles.

Sniper Rifles

  • TTS XCEED
  • NTW-20
  • DSR-1
  • TRG M10

When it comes to taking out your enemies from the other side of the map you need to turn to sniper rifles, and there is plenty to work with here. The TTS XCEED, from German manufacturer Tec Target Schneider, once again features a pretty sizable number of customization options. From different barrel lengths to a huge range of different calibers Once again, this feels like a gun that will play towards the new customization system, which in many ways is even more important when you’re dealing with sniper rifles.

Another interesting inclusion is the NTW-20, a South African rifle that’s designed to take down tanks and other armor, rather than for use against your fellow infantry. Not that you probably couldn’t use it against an enemy squad if you’re determined enough. The DSR-1 is a sniper rifle popular with police forces and anti-terrorism organizations around the world, and the TRG M10 is a very sleek gun with a more back-heavy design.

Shotguns

  • Crye SIX12
  • Saiga-12
  • Remington 870MCS

Boomsticks abound. For shotgun users among you, there are several options. For the modern shotgun connoisseur, the Crye SIX12 is a modular gun that fits right into that previously explored customization mechanic, as well as looking as modern as possible, and having a very confusing name for those with dyscalculia. Next up is the Saiga-12, a Russian shotgun that looks suspiciously similar to the AK-47 and its many derivatives, but other than that it’s very similar to the SIX12 in terms of customization and modernity.

The really interesting choice here is the Remington Model 870, more specifically the MCS (modular combat shotgun) variant. This is easily one of the grandaddies of shotguns, at least the original is. If you can’t already guess from that name, the MCS version’s main new addition is the ability to quickly and easily change out parts on the fly, as if that’s a shock at this point.

Bolt-Action & Misc

  • Marlin 45 70
  • Cobra R9 Crossbow

The final revealed weapons for Battlefield 2042 are a crossbow and a bolt-action rifle, allowing those with some unconventional loadout ideas to have their fun. The Marlin 45 70 is a large bore hunting rifle that is incredibly popular in various places for its stopping power and reliability. While the Cobra R9 Crossbow is a handheld crossbow that has more loadout options than you can even imagine.

What We Can Learn From The Battlefield 2042 Weapons

So far it’s pretty easy to see the direction that DICE is going in with Battlefield 2042. A lot of people have been getting excited about the new customization system that allows you to swap out components on your weapons while you’re active in the field. A lot of the weapons that have been revealed seem to focus mostly on modular components that allow you to heavily customize your guns based on the situation and your personal preferences.

Another interesting note is the lack of highly futuristic guns. Guns do have a tendancy to be used for a long time with some minor variations, but it’s still a bit of a shock to see so few next-gen weapons on the list here. Still, there’s the MCX Spear, and it’s likely that when the game actually drops we’ll start to see some more next-gen weapons entering the game. At the very least, updates should hopefully bring some of the most cutting-edge weapon tech into the fight.

The Final Word

And there you have it, a complete list of the different weapons that we know about for the upcoming Battlefield 2042.
