The amount of hype that preceded the release of Battlefield 2042 was palpable. The Open Beta had a tremendous amount players, so many that there were server issues during the Open Beta. Then there was of-course the many various errors and problems that arose during the Beta, all of which should have been a red flag hinting towards the finished game’s abundance of bugs. Some of the issues weren’t even bugs, but some were intentionally absent from the game, like in-game voice chat. Also, the servers became infamous for their unreliability, with people often facing server errors or even the servers just being completely down at times.

All of these various faults have led to one thing… A poor number of sales. Considering EA allowed all players to try it out during the Open Beta for free, a lot of people got to see the poor and buggy game up close and personal. Thus leading to a lot of people not bothering to pick up the game. Then a further portion of Battlefield’s target demographic saw the poor reviews for the AAA game.

Free-to-Play?

To tr to recover from this failure, EA are considering making Battlefield 2042 free-to-play. Tom Henderson, a leaker who accurately foretold Battlefield 2042’s info before its release, said on Twitter that he has heard EA is ‘looking at all the options’ when it comes to the game’s future. That includes making it Free-to-Play and thus hoping that they can recover financially via microtransactions.

Although, it’s worth noting that this won’t happen for a good few months. If EA do indeed choose to go through with this, we’ve got to wonder what exactly will become of those who did buy the game. Will they get a refund or some kind of in-game credit? Either way, there’s a lot to see about this. And how EA plan to save Battlefield 2042.
