When it comes to 4X strategy titles, those created by Paradox Interactive are typically the cream of the crop. The latest in the Crusader Kings series, Crusader Kings 3, dropped in September of 2020 and became immediately popular with fans of the series for several reasons. The game is incredibly deep and allows players to really sink into the interpersonal drama of medieval European kingdoms, but that wealth of content isn’t limitless, and plenty of players have put hundreds of hours into the game. If you’re one of these players, you’ll want to spice up your gameplay experience, and console commands can help you do that.

Console commands can do everything from killing off your enemies to spawning new resources and claims on land for your monarch. You’ll be shocked by how much you can do with these commands, so to help you wrap your head around the wealth of options, we’ve compiled all of the best and most useful console commands into the list below.

How to Open the Command Console in Crusader Kings 3

The command console isn’t enabled by default in Crusader Kings 3, so you’re going to have to jump through several hoops before you’ll be able to switch up your gameplay experience. To make the console available in-game, you’ll need to add some launch parameters to your game, and how you do that will be different depending on where you bought the game. On Steam, for example, you can just right-click the game, hit properties, then enter the modifier below into the Launch Options field and you’re done.

Find the game in its install directory if you’re using a DRM-free version, like GOG. It should be called ‘ck3.exe’. Now right-click the file and select ‘create shortcut.’ Now, right-click your shortcut, and add the text below to the end of the ‘target’ field. Just make sure you leave a space between the speech mark and the start of your code.

-debug_mode

With that done, you can now launch your game in debug mode. Bear in mind that the command console is only available outside of Ironman Mode. The key you’ll need to press to open the command console is different depending on your layout, but you should start with the ‘`’ key, which is just under escape. Try Shift+2 or the keys above the right shift if that doesn’t work.

For example, you can Alt-click on a character to kill them, or Ctrl-click on them to take control of that character. You should also keep your eye out for some extra options at the bottom of the character interaction menu that lets you do things like forcing a character to like/hate you or instantly make someone pregnant.
