Dead Island 2 is so close to releasing and fans can’t wait to get their hands on it. While the release is quite soon, some want to be able to play it as early as possible. One way to try and achieve this is through something called the New Zealand trick, which involves changing your timezone in order to make your console think you’re in a region that gets the game earlier. While it works for some games, does it work for Dead Island 2? Here’s everything you need to know.

Can I play Dead Island 2 early?

In short, no. The New Zealand trick does not work for Dead Island 2. In fact, there are reports coming in from Reddit that attempting to try the New Zealand trick on Dead Island 2 causes the game unlock to be delayed for a further 24 hours. One user wrote: “Tried doing the NZ trick on epic games. Now my games delayed by a day lmfao.”

Despite the risks associated with the New Zealand trick, it hasn’t stopped a lot of gamers trying to use it to play the game early. In light of the above we would strongly advise not wasting your time.

How does the New Zealand trick work?

Again, do not try it with this game, but if you want to know how it works, we’re happy to do that. The trick involces going into your console’s region settings and changing it, so it ‘thinks’ you’re in another time zone. Sometimes, if there is a midnight launch globally, this allows you to get access to the game before your region is meant to. If you’re on PC, one common way of doing this is to use a VPN.

Here, you would use the VPN to set your location, in this case New Zealand, and then try your luck. Despite it not working for Dead Island 2, this has worked for a number of games in the past. Resident Evil 4, for example, saw some success with gamers using the New Zealand trick, but here at WePC we’re advocates of waiting until the official release date.

The good news is that right now you can pre-load Dead Island 2 on most systems, apart from PC – so when it does drop, you’ll be fully prepped and ready to tackle the zombie hordes. Also make sure to check out you can actually run the game, by performing a pre-flight equipment check against the official Dead Island 2 system requirements.
