Fans of the Call of Duty franchise are no strangers to having their ranks reset or resetting their ranks in order to prestige. Even in 2019’s Modern Warfare, the game would reset your rank every season in order for you to reach a new seasonal high. As such, fans are curious if MW2 is going to start resetting ranks with each season.

Since prestiging no longer requires a rank reset, players are curious how they will keep reaching higher and higher levels of prestige. With season 2, the prestige capped at 9 and stopped you from going past level 450. Let’s go over what the new max is for Season 3 of Modern Warfare 2.

Do Ranks Reset In MW2?

MW2 do ranks reset

You will not have to worry about losing your rank in between seasons of MW2. It seems that instead of resetting everyone’s rank with each season, players are instead level locked until the release of the next season. As such, you could only reach level 450 and prestige 9 during Season 2 but now with season 3 that cap has gone up.

With Season 3, the max level cap is much higher, so you had better start using all those double XP boosts from the battle pass. You will also be able to reach a higher prestige as you climb up the ranks. However, this is not that big of a deal since prestige-ing is done automatically as you go up in level and doesn’t reset anything. For every 50 levels, you will automatically prestige whether you want to or not.

When Is the Modern Warfare 2 Ranked Reset?

The third season commenced on April 12, 2023, and the first rank reset of MW2 for the current season happened that day. This implies that your existing rank will be reduced to a lower level. For example, if you are presently in the Gold division, you will be demoted to the Silver division.

How Does the Modern Warfare 2 Ranked Reset Work?

At the start of each new season, your skill level will be lowered by one tier, with the rank you earned in the previous season serving as the starting point. For instance, if you earned the Platinum rank in the previous season, you will be demoted to the Gold rank.

Additionally, players will be granted three matches of demotion protection, allowing them to accumulate SR without being subjected to any loss penalties. This feature is particularly critical for players in the Top 250 and Iridescent divisions.

What Ranks Drop During the MW2 Rank Reset?

The following is a breakdown of the MW2 rank resets:

Rank Before ResetRank After Reset
BronzeBronze Tier 1
SilverBronze
GoldSilver
PlatinumGold
DiamondPlatinum
CrimsonDiamond
IridescentDiamond Tier 1
Top 250Diamond Tier 1

You also don’t really get any more bonuses from prestiging outside of a new icon for your prestige level. You can’t choose which icon to use, so once you go up another 50 levels you will switch to the newest icon you have available.

So while you don’t have to worry about losing your rank in between seasons anymore, it almost feels pointless to keep it. You are limited on how high you can go and don’t really unlock anything special for reaching the max rank.
