The Elden Ring Tree Sentinel is the first boss that you can come across in Elden Ring. The big bad is a mounted knight boss, that patrols the area you exit after the short tutorial. When you emerge from the tutorial into Limgrave, you can see the Tree Sentinel walking along the plains almost immediately, marked by his big golden armor on a giant horse. We highly recommend skipping this boss until you have better early game weapons or have upgraded your gear with Smithing Stones. If you do take it on early, there are a few tips you’re going to need to know.

How to beat the Elden Ring Tree Sentinel boss

You can use a few strategies to take out the Tree Sentinal. We recommend using a variation of these three techniques:

  • Ranged Weaponry
  • Kite to the Church of Elleh
  • Fight it around boulders in the fields
  • Summon Spirits

Ranged weapons are good because you can effectively kite or use the game’s geography to your advantage. Ranged weapons are absolutely crucial to taking this down early. However, it becomes less relevant when you start leveling up as you can get better gear and armor. The Samurai has decent ranged skills, so anyone rolling Samurai may find this fight easier early on.

Alternatively, the environment can prove useful in your fight. The Limgrave biome is filled with fields, rocks, trees, boulders and cliffs. We recommend fighting the Tree Sentinel around these rocks, boulders, and trees, as there is a chance you can hide from its swings, or make it get collide with these objects allowing you to get a few swings or ranged attacks in, chipping away at its health. However, the boss can chop trees down, so you better not rely too much on tree tactics.

Alternatively, you can kite it up to the Church of Elleh if you wish. This method is good, as it forces the boss into narrow chokepoints, making it so much easier to hit the boss, especially if you use ranged attacks. However, do be aware that the boss can run a rampage through the church, bulldozing it in the process. Destroying the church has unintended consequences, such as making it much harder to unlock summoning, a feature useful later on in the game. If you’re going to use this method, you need to be swift about putting the boss down.

Tree Sentinel Boss mechanics

While it’s all well and good knowing a few techniques that make killing the Tree Sentinel much easier, you still need to prepare your defensive skills. The boss has quite a few mechanics that you’re going to need to roll from

  • Right side cleave – The boss charges his mount towards you, turns his body so you’re on the right and swings his giant axe. You need to roll back to dodge it.
  • Charge slash -The boss can charge forward and slash his axe downwards.
  • Charge and swipe -Another variation of the charge skill. The boss charges to your location and sweeps his axe from the floor trying to launch you in the air in the process on the mount’s right side.
  • Horse stamp – The mount jumps in the air and slams its front hooves down on your position.
  • Charge and jump – the Mount and the boss charges and jumps onto your position.

Please be aware that the animations and your distance from the boss may mean these skills may look slightly different every time. Understanding these attack patterns also help you not trample the church if you choose to fight it near Elleh.
