Elden Ring is here with its day 1 patch and global launch. While Souls fans are back rolling from bosses and exploring the unique open world, some players are wondering how to level up in Elden Ring. It appears the new leveling system is somewhat confusing. Previous Souls games somewhat inspire the Elden Ring level system, but there is a twist. This guide will help you level up in Elden Ring.

You need to know that you cannot start leveling up straight away in Elden Ring. When you select your class and start playing, you will get into the game after a short introduction at The First Step. If you follow the Guidance of Grace, which appear from Sites of Grace, you will stumble upon a character called Finger Maiden Melina at the Site of Grace to the east of The Church of Elleh, which is slightly north of The First Step. Be aware that a ferocious Tree Sentinel boss guards this area. You can choose to fight it if you wish, but it is best to live and fight another day.

Presuming you have avoided the boss and followed the hint, you can interact with these NPCs. Eventually, you will unlock the leveling system in Elden Ring. This is also how you get your mount, Torrent.

The game does somewhat direct you to do these with subtle hints directing you along that path, but it is easy to miss if you’re taken aghast by the world and the limitless options in front of you.

Now that you’ve learned how to level up in Elden Ring, you must start gaining XP. This mechanic is similar to Dark Souls. When you defeat enemies, you stumble across runes, which you can drop when you die. You have the opportunity to reclaim them, but they disappear if you die again. The classic Souls-like experience is still present in Elden Ring.

In addition, players have the choice to use these Runes on buying levels up, or purchasing gear from vendors they meet throughout the world. It adds some interesting decisions while you level up or gear up.
