There are countless ways to take damage in Elden Ring. Burning waves of fire, the swing of a knight’s broadsword, succumbing to poison. But one of the most frustrating sources of damage in Elden Ring is falling. It is all too easy to jump off a ledge at what you thought was a safe height, only to be swiftly and humiliatingly sent back to your last Site of Grace. Thankfully, there are ways to get around taking fall damage in Elden Ring, allowing you to explore the Lands Between to your heart’s content!

Elden Ring: Rainbow Stone

One of the easiest items to craft in Elden Ring is a Rainbow Stone. All that this item requires to craft is a single ruin fragment. When you use a Rainbow Stone, you will drop the stone a short distance In front of you. When it hits the floor, the stone will glow brightly. A simple visual effect and nothing more? Not at all, as very little is as it seems in Elden Ring.

If you are standing directly in front of a drop and are unsure if you will survive the fall, try crafting and using a Rainbow Stone. The stone will fall to the bottom of wherever you are about to jump to. If the stone stays intact, it will begin to glow as usual. But if the fall would deal enough damage to kill you, then the Rainbow Stone will shatter on impact! This is an essential delving tool that should not be overlooked.

Dexterity allows a soft landing

Dexterity is a highly useful stat in Elden Ring. Even if you aren’t going for a dex build, it can be worth investing a few points in dexterity all the same. This is because increasing dexterity has uses beyond simply upgrading weapon damage. Higher dexterity means less chance of being knocked off Torrent. And – crucially – it also reduces fall damage up to a certain point. For each additional point in dexterity, the amount of fall damage you take will be reduced slightly.

Soft Cotton

Soft Cotton is one of the most useful consumables in Elden Ring. Using this item temporarily muffles any sound you make, and it also reduces fall damage for a short period of time. Soft Cotton can be found throughout the Lands Between, but the most reliable way to acquire it is crafting.

In order to craft Soft Cotton in Elden Ring, you first need to find the Nomadic Warrior’s Cookbook [7]. This item is located on a corpse at the end of a broken bridge near Stormveil Castle. Once the cookbook is acquired, mixing Smouldering Butterflies and Rowa Fruit together will create Soft Cotton.

Immunity to fall damage

These are all useful ways of mitigating fall damage in Elden Ring. But, once you have progressed far enough into the game, there is actually a way to get rid of fall damage altogether.

Once you reach the Academy of Raya Lucaria within Liurnia of the Lakes, make your way to the Schoolhouse Classroom Site of Grace. From there ride the lift down from the graveyard to find the Longtail Cat Talisman on a corpse. Equipping this Talisman makes you immune to fall damage!

It is important to note however, even the Longtail Cat Talisman will not save you if you fall out of bounds. This is because falling out of bounds does not technically do fall damage to you. Instantly, after falling a certain distance, your health is automatically set to zero and you are put into a death state. As this is not ‘fall damage’, it cannot be negated or reduced in any way. So you cannot rely on this method to throw yourself into parts of the game that are intended to be blocked off entirely until you reach them via normal means.
