Sorceries and Incantations are your two major forms of Magic in Elden Ring. Incantations stem from Faith, whereas Sorceries are powered by Intelligence. While Elden Ring’s classes initially point you towards wielding one or the other, there is nothing – other than the upgrade cost in Runes – that prevents you from wielding both Sorceries and Incantations at once. We walk you through how to cast Sorceries and Incantations in Elden Ring so that your tarnished can wield both the magical and the miraculous!

Memorising Sorceries and Incantations in Elden Ring

Though the powers that you can wield as a Tarnished in Elden Ring are great, they are not limitless. Magic is among your most powerful tools, and FromSoft has been wise enough to place certain limitations on it. In order to preserve their customary level of challenge.

At a Site of Grace, select the Memorize Spell option. With this, you can swap between a limited number of Sorceries and Incantations. These can be changed and adjusted whenever you visit a Site of Grace. By finding items in the world called Memory Stones, the number of spells you can equip at once will increase!

Elden Ring Magic: Sorceries

In order to cast magic in Elden Ring, it isn’t enough to simply have the Sorcery or Incantation spell equipped. You need specific items through which to channel your Magic. For Sorceries, the item is a Staff. Certain classes – the Prisoner and Astrologer – start with a staff by default. But if you start with another class, then you’re going to have to go out and find a staff somewhere in the Lands Between. Perhaps the easiest place to acquire one is from the boss of the Demi-human forest ruins towards the south of Limgrave.

Once you have access to a Staff, you’re going to need somewhere to get your Sorceries from. Thankfully, we can get you there easily enough. Head to the Waypoint Ruins, and once you have defeated the boss there, you will be able to talk to Sorceress Sellen. This NPC will be able to sell you Sorceries from this point on. And if you bring her specific tomes scattered about the world, her stock of Sorceries will increase!

Elden Ring Magic: Incantations

Incantations in Elden Ring require a different channel than Sorceries. These are Sacred Seals. The classes that start with Sacred Seals are the Confessor and the Prophet. If you start with any of the other classes, head to northern Limgrave and defeat the boss of Summonwater village to receive your first Seal.

Incantation spells are somewhat easier to get a hold of in Elden Ring. While Sorceries require a little bit of out-of-the-way exploration, you will stumble upon your first Incantation vendor by default as you progress through the main path!

Once you are given access to Roundtable hold, simply speak with one of the NPCs in the main room, and you can begin to buy Incantations from them.
