Armour in Elden Ring may be found across various locations in the Lands Between. The chance to suit up in new defensive gear can come from treasure boxes or defeating formidable enemies.

But, I hear you ask, “where are the greatest armor sites, and which armor sets are the most effective at repelling enormous swords and monstrous tentacles that make me want to cry?”

The greatest Elden Ring armor sets keep you safe and stylish while exploring the Lands Between is…

Well, actually, it’s difficult to declare any armor in a FromSoftware game “the greatest,” because different armor sets fit different builds, especially depending on your Endurance stat.

But below, we’ve located a mix of early armor, mid-game armor, and late armor sets to choose from and described how to obtain them. If you’re in a hurry, here’s a slew of awesome outfits to see you through the game.

Why 7…?

As we believe this gives all types of players, from cautious to confident, the best options to thrive in their class and playstyle. Whilst there are many more sets of armor to be found across the desolate grounds of the Lands Between, you can’t wear them all at once, and you’re going to have to make some tough decisions over what armor to sport. That’s where this ultimate guide helps you narrow down all that decision-making to let you focus on what matters: playing the way you want!

But, like in Dark Souls, you may always equip armor simply because you enjoy the way it looks. Besides, anything beyond a certain level will take a hit or two anyhow. Most of the sets below are excellent in terms of balancing the ‘awesome’ aesthetic and actual defense.

Remember: While select foes can drop specific armor in Elden Ring at random, most of the greatest armor sets aren’t. So, you’ve got to keep your eyes peeled to find the best ones. Or… you could just read this guide!

Knight Armour Mid-game armor that is hefty yet sturdy. After defeating Godrick, the Twin Husks sell the Knight Armour at Roundtable Hold. If you’re having trouble, we have a tutorial on how to defeat Godrick in Elden Ring.

Banished Knight Armour – A relatively common piece of armor that, despite its weight, is among the best in the game. Remember those super strong, towering figures you see wandering the lower regions of Stormveil Castle? Yep? Well, those are Banished Knights, and they have a slim chance of dropping items, such as this armor.

Raging Wolf Armour – It not only looks great, but it also provides excellent defense without being too… hefty. Simply complete two assassination contracts for Lady Tanith at Volcano Manor before hunting in Leyndell with her sidekick Bernahl. Along the road, you’ll also obtain the Scaled Armor, which is both practical and looks great.

Radahn Armour – Extremely heavy and providing massive defense – absolutely only for builds with excellent Endurance. After defeating Starscourge Radahn at Redmane Castle, Enia will sell it to you at the Roundtable Hold. Want to look like Ganandorf? Here’s your chance!

Queen’s Crescent Crown – A part of the Queen’s outfit that increases your character’s intellect while worn. Simply beat Rennala’s boss at Raya Lucaria Academy, then purchase it from Enia at the Roundtable Hold.

Karolus and Olivinus Glintstone Crowns These are a bit of a compromise if you can’t get your hands on the Queen’s Crescent Crown. These helmets improve your intellect at the expense of either stamina or HP, depending on which one you select, making them an excellent option for Sorcerers. Both are situated in Raya Lucaria Academy and need you to take a slight detour to locate:

(a) Olivunus Crown is found South of the Schoolhouse Classroom Site of Grace. Turn left, tap the bookshelf, and a secret balcony is revealed. Hop down on the left, follow it, then go up the rocks to see the crown gently resting on a dead body.

(b) Karolus Crown comes after the Debate Parlour Site of Grace. If you can’t recall this place exactly, it’s the Red Wolf of Radagon boss’ hangout. Go outside, go Northwest until you hit a corner of the courtyard. Stick tight to the left cliff edge path until you see a glowing crab. It’s a pretty cool crab, but you’ve got to kill it if you want the Karolus Crown.

Land of Reeds (Samurai) Armour –  Provides substantial protection while still being surprisingly light. The Samurai class begins with it, or it may be purchased from the shopkeeper in North Caelid over in the Isolated Merchant’s Shack Site of Grace.

Vagabond Armour – Another hefty but powerful alternative that won’t be easily available until the mid-to-late game. The Vagabond begins with it, or it may be purchased from a trader in central Mountaintops of the Giants, near the Ancient Snow Valley Ruins Site of Grace.

A bonus set for early-to-mid game

The Spellblade Set –  This classy caster set increases glintstone magic damage, so it’s great to have throughout the mid or even early-game. The set is sported by Sorcerer Rogier, who can be found in Stormveil Castle’s chapel. Speaking to him there will cause him to move to Roundtable Hold.

But, if you want his armor as soon as possible, you’ve got to murder him in Stormveil.

If you’re a bit more patient, you may just let him stay in Roundtable Hold (without completing his side quest) long enough for you to receive the set after his narrative is completed.

How to choose the best armor set for your character

While it’s hard to pick sets based on anything but personal preference, if you’re struggling to choose yourself, the Banished Knight and Radahn Armour sets are your best bets. Both provide excellent protection, no matter your build.

However, they’re also rather heavy, so you’ll want to be mindful of how much you wear in case you wind up weighing yourself down.

Overall, if heavier armor is vital to your gameplay style, we recommend significantly increasing your Endurance. Otherwise, wearing too much armor and equipment will result in a “Heavy Load” condition, causing you to move and roll considerably more slowly and at the expense of more stamina – a massive hindrance, no matter how well protected you are.

Can you change armor sets stats at Sites of Grace?

No matter how many Elden Ring Smithing Stones you donate, Hewg and other blacksmiths will not enhance your armor – you must just acquire a better set.

While armor cannot be improved or strengthened at the Blacksmith in Elden Ring, there is a tiny exception in the form of modifying garments at Sites of Grace, which slightly changes the stats of specific sets without necessarily enhancing them.
