It’s been a difficult few years for Barcelona, both on and off the pitch. They look miles away from the team that won a treble just seven years ago.

Off the pitch there have been issues with recruitment, financial problems and just general mismanagement. All of this has meant they have struggled to compete on the pitch.

The pandemic highlighted just how unsustainably Barcelona was being run with the club constantly throwing money at signings, in hope of recreating their best form.

They have also lost influential figures in the last few years, most notably Lionel Messi, who had been at the club since he was 13. Messi is the best player Barcelona’s academy ‘La Masia’ had ever produced, but the aforementioned financial struggles meant they couldn’t afford to register the him and he left on a free transfer to PSG.

This was just over a year ago now, and despite recapturing some of their identity and spirit under new manager Xavi, they are still a long way off where they once was.

It’s for this reason Barcelona player ratings are so challenging to predict for FIFA 23. They were very inconsistent last season, but the youngsters the club brought through, look to be incredible talents for the future.

Barcelona: Goalkeepers and defenders

araujo

Marc-André ter Stegen – 88 (-2)

Iñaki Peña – 69 (-)

Neto – 81 (-1)

Ronald Araújo – 81 (+4)

Andreas Christensen – 80 (-)

Eric García – 78 (+1)

Óscar Minqueza – 77 (+2)

Gerard Pique – 84 (-)

Samuel Umtiti – 79 (-1)

Jordi Alba – 86 (-)

Sergiño Dest – 77 (+1)

Jules Koundé – 84 (+1)

Hector Bellerin – 78 (-)

There is a very high chance that this whole squad looks completely different by the time the transfer window slams shut. Barcelona, despite all their financial issues, are aggressively recruiting this summer with plenty of players rumoured to be coming and going.

By the time FIFA 23 releases they may have a completely new back line, players like Umtiti are surplus to requirement. New signing Andreas Christensen could be a smart bit of business but he only featured in 19 league games for former club Chelsea last season.

What will be most interesting going into FIFA 23 will be how much they boost youngsters like Araújo, who is a relative newcomer to the squad, and still has plenty of room to develop.

Barcelona: Midfielders

pedri

Sergio Busquets – 86 (-)

Pedri – 83 (+2)

Frenkie de Jong – 87 (-)

Gavi – 77 (+7)

Franck Kessie – 85 (+1)

Nico Gonazález – 68 (-)

Miralem Pjanic – 79 (-3)

Riqui Puig – 75 (-1)

Sergi Roberto – 80 (-1)

Barcelona’s midfield is in an interesting place, with Busquets still the heart of it and consistently performing well last season, while players like Pedri and Gavi are only just getting going.

Pedri and Gavi are both incredibly young, but after their performances last year they should both be in-line for upgrades. Especially Gavi.

Once again, it’s unknown how this team will look by the time FIFA 23 releases later this year, with Frenkie de Jong being linked with a fresh move daily.

Barcelona also already made one signing for their engine room in the shape of Ivorian central midfielder, Franck Kessie from Serie A champions A.C Milan.

It remains to be seen how well he fits in, but he had an amazing campaign last season and Barcelona did well to nab him once his contract expires. He should add some grit, quality and experience to a very young midfield.

The only thing that is certain for Barcelona in FIFA 23, is just how good some of their players will be for fans of career mode.

Barcelona: Forwards

Memphis Depay

Ansu Fati – 77 (+1)

Ferran Torres – 82 (-)

Raphinha – 83 (+1)

Memphis – 85 (-)

Robert Lewandowski – 92 (-)

Barcelona’s forward line struggled last season in a lot of ways. The biggest issue they faced was injuries, with both Fati and Memphis out for long stints during the season.

Despite this, it seems likely Fati’s age will contribute to him getting a slight upgrade in FIFA 23. He only managed to play in 9 games in the league but he still managed 4 goals and an assist. Hopefully he can stay fit next season and show the world what he is truly capable of.

New signing Raphinha has finally been announced in what feels like an age of back and forth between clubs. He had a very good season for Leeds last season, and was crucial in keeping them in the Premier League, he should expect a small upgrade.

Before his move to Barcelona in January, it would have been a safe bet to think Aubameyang would have had his ratings dropped for FIFA 23. Yet, since he arrived he has been scoring for fun. He got himself 11 goals in just seventeen games for the La Liga runners up last year.

After weeks of rumours, it looks as though Barcelona have their main man for the new season. They have signed Robert Lewandowski, he could be crucial for them next season, with his goalscoring record at former club Bayern Munich being nothing short of remarkable.

Final thoughts

After a few years of reckless spending it looked as though Barcelona would have to be more sensible in the transfer market. This hasn’t really been the case, as they continue to spend big money on players like Raphinha.

More business will be done over the summer and what Barcelona gets up to will be fascinating to spectate upon. After all the business they have already done, they have finally signed Polish Captain, and striker Robert Lewandowski, who was unhappy at his former club. Now they have somehow pulled this off, they will certainly be one to watch next season.

FIFA 23 will be an interesting game for Barcelona, their blend of youth and odd recruitment decisions, makes them a difficult team to make predictions for. Although, there is no denying its fascinating to watch.
