With the new chemistry systems that have been introduced into FIFA 23, there are now some different options with what you can do with players. Certain central players can now be pushed out wide and vice versa, and there are many other options too unique to individual players.

With that in mind we take a look at the best formations in the game, especially when you will be starting out in FIFA 23’s Ultimate Team for the first time.

The meta in FIFA often changes, especially as new cards release and we approach the better promos in the game. However, these are the best formations to try in the game, if you’re hoping to succeed.

FIFA 23 Ultimate Team Best Formations: 4-3-3 (False 9)

The 4-3-3 is one of the most standard formations in the modern game. If you have the right midfielders you can smother teams in the middle of the park, whilst still having options out wide too. The striker dropping into midfield also helps keep the position.

We have opted for the version of this formation that has a defensive midfielder so you can have a bit more cover in defence, allowing for your fullbacks to push up the pitch. In this formation, going forward you can create overloads with overlapping wing backs so you always have a player in plenty of space.

This formation has plenty of width provided by wingbacks, whilst also allowing for plenty of options in the middle of the park. Two strikers will give you something to aim up, as well as letting you completely outnumber opposition defences when you attack.

It is a formation that may take a bit of getting used to but it also allows you to use slightly more attacking midfielders because of the extra defender. The extra defender also gives you a lot of cover at the back, and an extra option when trying to consolidate possession.

FIFA 23 Ultimate Team Best Formations: 3-4-3

3-4-3 offers plenty of width, you have wingers as well as wingbacks pushing up the pitch. With this formation in particular, you are best off using full backs/wing backs in the left and right midfield positions, as they will offer you something offensively and defensively.

With the 3-4-3 you will always have a spare man in order to keep possession, but when you recover the ball it is the best formation to counter with. This shape ensures you have plenty of players surging up the pitch when you counter, and it will often leave the opposition very outnumbered.

Admittedly, this formation does leave you quite light in the middle of the pitch, so having your striker set to false nine will help prevent you from being smothered in the middle of the pitch.

Where the 3-4-3 leaves you with little in the middle, but plenty of width, the 4-1-2-1-2 does the opposite. You will always have plenty of players in the middle of the park, so if you’re tidy in possession and good at picking out a pass, this formation is for you.

The only downside to the 4-1-2-1-2 is your width. All of the width comes from your fullbacks so it is worth trying to ensure they are back at all times, otherwise you could get caught out on the counter. Used effectively, this formation is one of the best for keeping possession across the 90 minutes.

FIFA 23 Ultimate Team Best Formations: 4-4-2

4-4-2 is the classic, the Sean Dyche, the lower league formation. Despite that, it is still incredibly effective in FIFA. You have players everywhere you need them, it’s easily customisable using player instructions and you’re strong both offensively and defensively.

This is also one of the few formations that allows for you to cross the ball effectively because you will often have man left over when you’re attacking. Sometimes, you just can’t knock a classic.

This formations is being floated about right now on Twitter as the best formation to start with in the game. It offers plenty of cover defensively, whilst still having two forwards to bang goals. It may seem negative to look at, but in game it offers plenty going forward, especially if you instruct one of your midfielders to get forward too.

So far, this looks as though it will be the meta for the first few weeks of the game, and is one of the most defensively sound formations in the whole game.

FIFA 23 Best Formation: 4-2-2-2

Once you wrap your head around saying this formation (we all know you said too many 2s) you’ll realise it is a must try in FIFA 23. The formation is very popular in Germany, and with managers who like to press because of the traps you can initiate all over the pitch. While in FIFA 23, the versatility of this formation is what makes it stand out.

This formation will defend like a 4-4-2, but going forward you have passing options everywhere, while still having a sturdy foundation to defend with. There is width if you need it, and you can push player out wide, yet you also have plenty of players in and around the box to allow for narrow passing options.

What is the Best Formation in FIFA 23?

Right now, with the current meta in the game, we think the 5-1-2-2 will be the best formation for the opening few weeks of the game. However, if you don’t like using five at the back, then you can’t go wrong with a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, as both will give you plenty of options across the pitch.
