It was a very rocky season for Chelsea last time out. Record signing Romelu Lukaku didn’t work out for either party, with the Belgian striker already back on loan at Inter Milan. They struggled for goals throughout the whole season, with only one player scoring more than 10 goals in the league.

Off the pitch they had huge problems regarding their ownership. These problems eventually started to impact the form of the players on the pitch; there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the club and it showed towards the end of the season.

Fortunately the problems off the pitch have been resolved and the Blues are ready to prepare for the new season. They have already done some business in the transfer window, and will continue to do so, until their squad is at least good enough to secure Champions League football.

Despite all this they still managed to put in a good showing and successfully finished third in the Premier League. There shouldn’t be too many changes with their current players on FIFA 23, but the new players coming in could really freshen up the squad.

Chelsea: Goalkeepers and defenders

thiago silva

Edouard Mendy – 86 (+3)

Kepa Arrizabalaga – 80 (+1)

Marcus Bettinelli – 71 (-)

Kalidou Koulibaly – 87 (+1)

Trevoh Chalobah – 79 (+6)

Ethan Ampadu – 70 (+2)

Malang Sarr – 75 (+1)

Thiago Silva – 86 (+1)

Ben Chilwell – 83 (+1)

Marcos Alonso – 79 (-1)

Reece James – 84 (+3)

César Azpilicueta  – 83 (-)

Wesley Fofana – 79 (+1)

In FIFA 23 Chelsea can expect a few of their defenders to get good boosts. Edouard Mendy continued to prove why he is one of the best goalkeepers around, continuing on from a very strong campaign the year before.

Mendy also won The AFCON with Senegal in January, to help solidify his status as one of the best. A plus three may even be a bit low, but it is rare for FIFA to do upgrades bigger than that. Reece James was also outstanding last season at right wing back, and will also be likely to get a significant boost for FIFA 23.

Considering his age Thiago Silva appears to get better every year, but after significant losses to their back line Chelsea need to strengthen.

Chelsea lost influential centre back Rüdiger on a free, while Christensen also left on a free. Fortunately they have brought in the experienced Kalidou Koulibaly. He should go a long way helping replace what they lost, while the addition of promising youngster Fofana will also help them.

Koulibaly has long been tipped for the biggest sides, this signing really is one to watch for the season. Expect his price to rocket too, now that he has left Serie A.

Chelsea: Midfielders

mount

Jorginho – 85 (-)

Mateo Kovacic – 84 (+1)

N’Golo Kanté – 88 (-2)

Conor Gallagher – 79 (+5)

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 76 (+1)

Billy Gilmour – 72 (-)

Ross Barkley – 76 (-2)

Mason Mount – 85 (+2)

Chelsea’s midfield has a good blend of dynamism and grit that has helped them sustain being one of Europe’s best clubs, but they are starting to age.

Conor Gallagher, an academy graduate, is returning to the club after a very successful season with Crystal Palace. He looks ready for the top clubs and he could go be the key to freshening up, this ageing midfield.

Their academy has continued to produce quality players like Mason Mount, who has just come off the back of an incredible individual campaign, it’s very likely the attacking midfielder will have a boost on FIFA 23

Unfortunately it looks as though we are beginning to see the decline of Kante, one of the best defensive midfielders of the last ten years. Kanté is slowly playing less minutes, and he is now struggling to sustain any kind of fitness, his stats are likely to reflect this in FIFA 23

Chelsea: Forwards

werner

Raheem Sterling – 87 (-1)

Christian Pulisic – 82 (-)

Callum Hudson-Odoi – 78 (+1)

Timo Werner – 83 (-1)

Armando Broja –  75 (+5)

Kai Havertz – 84 (-)

Hakim Ziyech – 83 (-1)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 85 (-)

In another attempt to fix their goal scoring problems, Chelsea have signed England winger Sterling, from Manchester City. This could be an incredible signing for the London club with only five players scoring more goals than Sterling, in the league, since he joined City.

Hopefully he is the missing piece to their front, the only thing that has been missing from this squad is goals and if they have found them, they could challenge for the league.

The other players in Chelsea’s front-line clearly have quality but they often fall short when it comes to taking chances. The best is till to come from Havertz and Werner could still come good.

There is certainly plenty of potential in the squad, and if this season is the season it clicks, they could be terrifying for opposition defences in real life and in FIFA 23

Final thoughts

There is enough quality in the Chelsea squad that they will continue to be competitive next season, it remains to be seen just how far they can go. A lot of this depends on who they sign between now and the end of the transfer window.

Whether they strengthen or not though, they have some very desirable players for FIFA 23, the pace in the front line is going to cause huge problems. Kanté, despite a reduction in his stats, will still be amazing too.

The best thing with Chelsea is to watch this space, as there is still plenty of time for a lot to change and they definitely will.

It seems likely that Sterling will be player to get the Ones to Watch card, as part of the first promo in the new Ultimate Team, but Koulibaly who would also be a good shout.
