The Fortnite Spiderman 2099 skin doesn’t have a mask off version and players want to know why.

In a collaboration with Marvel to promote Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Epic Games released Miles Morales and Miguel O’Hara (Spiderman 2099) skins for online purchase. The Miles Morales skin came with an unmasked version, but Miguel O’Hara remains cowled despite players wanting to see the face of Spiderman 2099.

Players want Spiderman 2099 unmasked

A Reddit post with a photoshopped version of the Spiderman 2099 skin has sparked discussion among players as to why a skin with Miguel O’Hara’s face was never released. Player interest in the proposed skin seems to be high. Reddit user u/RustedSoldierPR commented, “I hope that somehow when the third movie comes next year they release an unmasked version of him. He is my main skin right now, really wish he had an unmasked style.”

Players seem to think that this decision to hide Miguel’s face has to do with marketing the movie. Reddit user u/Sasuke Uchiha said, “Epic knew Miles would sell more so they did more with him than 2099.”

There may be some truth to this comment since Miles is the main protagonist of the movies, but that hasn’t stopped players from theorizing.

Another speculation is that since Spiderman 2099’s facial appearance seems to be made in the likeness of his voice actor, Oscar Isaac, that legal fees may be involved. Reddit user u/Samandre14, “I’m gonna guess that Epic can’t get his likeness. Unfortunate.”

Reddit user u/Right-Succotash-7864 pointed out in a comment under the post that the character Poe from the Star Wars sequel trilogy was never given a skin. This may give some weight to the theory that Oscar Isaac’s likeness is too expensive. Superheroes like Iron Man and Wolverine have remained masked since their introduction into the games as well.

However, unmasked superheroes like Black Widow and Captain Marvel have been available in the game before. With Fortnite’s visual cartoon style, the unmasked heroes look more like comic book iterations of the characters than copies of the actors, whether this design choice was intentional or not.

Collaborations between Marvel and Fortnite don’t seem to be stopping anytime soon so there may be hope for players who want to see Miguel O’Hara.
