Since the overwhelmingly popular launch of Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 1: Flipped on December 5th, 2021, players on console have noticed that the split screen function has been disabled.

It was reported on well-known Fortnite creator and leaker iFireMonkey’s Twitter feed on December 5th that split screen had been disabled temporarily from Fortnite’s new Chapter. It is thought this decision was made to lighten the load on the game and help prevent any unnecessary connectivity issues. It seems that was a good idea since the launch of Chapter 3 was the most popular yet, and there were issues with matchmaking, friends lists and more for the first few hours of the new Chapter.

Will split screen return to Fortnite in Chapter 3?

Split screen is only supposed disabled temporarily and will be coming back once the Chapter 3 launch is running smoothly. Since the launch was inundated with more players than Epic Games have ever had in a Season launch, there are probably other things to concentrate on in the meantime, as some players are still reporting difficulties, but if split screen is your only way to play with your nearest and dearest, hopefully it will be back within the next couple of days. We’ll update you as soon as we know more.

When it’s working, Fortnite split screen is only available on Xbox and PlayStation consoles, as compatibility with Nintendo consoles hasn’t been added yet, and it is also unavailable on PC and mobile devices.

In order to enable split screen on console:
Player 1, navigate to the main lobby in Fortnite
Player 2, turn on second controller
When asked, log into an account on the second controller
Follow the prompt to log Player 2 into the game (Triangle for PS, Y for Xbox)
Player 2 should now appear in the lobby, ready to play Duos, Trios or Squads
