Halo Infinite has been one of, if not the most anticipated FPS game of 2021, finally bringing Master Chief back into the fray for yet another battle against various alien enemies. Even though the game had a December 2021 release date, Xbox’s 20th Anniversary came with a surprise – Halo Infinite multiplayer releasing early.

As Halo as a whole is a pretty competitive franchise with deep roots in esports, fans have been worried that if skill based matchmaking is implemented, it could ruin the overall experience. While ranked modes will always have this, it is confined to those that want incredibly competitive matches away from the average gamer pool.

Below, we’re going to go through if Halo Infinite will have skill based matchmaking so that you know what you’re in for if you download the free-to-play multiplayer portion of the game before you rage and throw your controller across the room.

What does skill based matchmaking mean?

Essentially, skill based matchmaking aims to put players of a similar skill level in a multiplayer match together. This, in theory, should make for a more competitive match and make it a more enjoyable experience for all. However, while this sounds like a win-win, the split between loving and hating the feature is 50/50 with some suggesting that it takes the fun out of the game if every match is of championship level, main stage competitiveness.

Whether you’re for or against skill based matchmaking, it looks like it’s here to stay with more and more games taking this route to hopefully make online matches more fair. Call of Duty, Apex Legends, and more are pushing this hard so no matter what, we’re going to see it in some form well into the future.

The question on everyone’s lips when it comes to competitive multiplayer is if Halo Infinite has skill based matchmaking or not. Unfortunately for those that are skill based matchmaking naysayers, 343 confirmed way back when that the game will have skill based matchmaking implemented in its quick play mode.

After jumping into the Halo Infinite multiplayer ourselves, we have experienced the skill based matchmaking first hand. It does crank up the difficulty level of online games but in our opinion, it certainly doesn’t make it unplayable and will ultimately keep more players in the game for longer.
