Space fantasy RPG game Honkai: Star Rail is the fourth game in the Honkai series. While it isn’t a sequel to Honkai Impact 3rd, it features familiar characters and is set in the same universe. Its release was highly anticipated—with more than 10 million players registering to play ahead of launch. Now that it’s here, players are eager to get started.

However, many are running into an issue with the launcher not working preventing them from getting into the game. If you’re hitting the same wall, here are a few things you can do to solve the problem.

Solutions if the Honkai: Star Rail launcher won’t start

There could be a multitude of reasons why the Honkai: Star Rail launcher isn’t working. Here are a few potential fixes you can try.

  1. Check to see if your device meets the necessary system requirements
  2. Verify the game files
  3. Disable your DNS
  4. Check for updates, delete, and reinstall the game
  5. Check there isn’t a dump file
  6. Open the game as an administrator

What to check to see if your device meets the necessary system requirements

All games must meet certain requirements in order to run properly on your system. This can range from what operating system you’re using to how much storage you have on the specific device.

PC system requirements:

Honkai: Star Rail can be run with a minimum or recommended setting on PC. The minimum setting is the basic recommendation required in order to run the game, while the recommended setting will give you the best overall experience.

  • Minimum: Windows 7 with a 64-bit processor
  • Recommended: Windows 10 with a 64-bit processor
  • Storage: 20GB.

Mobile system requirements:

Android:

  • Minimum: Android 8
  • Recommended: Android 9
  • Storage: 8.5GB

iPhone:

  • Minimum: iPhone 8 Plus with iOS 10.0
  • Recommended: iPhone XS, iPhone XR with iOS 11.0
  • Storage: 9GB

How to verify the game files

Sometimes a game will need to verify if all the necessary files are available in order to play the game. Oftentimes you’ll see during loading screens text that says verifying files. This means the game is looking to make sure it has all the files required to play the game. You can verify the files yourself on PC.

You can either check the files through the Epic Games Launcher or the official launcher itself. That is, of course, if the launcher even opens in the first place.

Epic Games Launcher

  1. Open up the game Library.
  2. Select the three dots next to Honkai: Star Rail.
  3. Scroll down on the pop-up menu and select Manage.
  4. Verify Files should be one of the options.
  5. It’ll take some time for the files to verify. Once they are, you can launch the game to see if it worked.

Honkai: Star Rail Launcher

  1. Open the game’s official launcher.
  2. Choose the three lines next to the name of the game.
  3. Select Clear download resources.
  4. Restart the launcher and try to start the game.
  5. Once in the game, it will download the cache to restore the files.

When to disable your DNS

Another possible fix is turning off your Domain Name System (DNS). While it isn’t recommended to do so, as it effectively means you have to type in individual IP addresses when searching the internet, it could fix the launcher. If this does work, you will want to enable DNS again once you’re through playing Honkai: Star Rail.

How to check for updates, delete, and reinstall the game

It could be that the game needs to be updated in order to open the launcher. If all else fails, you may just need to delete the game and install it again. That could very well fix the problem with the launcher.

Epic Games Launcher

  1. Click on your profile in the top right corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. If there is a Restart and Update option, it means an update is required.

If you can’t get the launcher open, your next option is to uninstall and delete the game then reinstall it. This will delete all of the files from your system so you have a fresh copy installed, preferably without the hiccup.

How to check there isn’t a dump file

Through an official HoYoverse forum, the team posted another possible fix for the launcher. It all has to do with what are called dump files. You can see if there are any such files by performing the following tasks:

  1. Try running the game by clicking the launcher.exe file in the directory.
  2. Check for any dump files
  3. If there are any, send them and the log file to the game’s official customer service.
  4. Search for the vc_redist_x64.exe file and install it by double-clicking the file.

You can try to run it by clicking the launcher.exe file in the game directory. Check if a dump file has been created in the launcher directory. If so, send the dump file and log file to our customer service.

If you have followed the above instructions but are still unable to solve the issues you have, please contact our customer service.

Open the game as an administrator

If all else fails, you can try to run the game as an administrator. This trick only works on PC.

  1. Find the game icon on your desktop.
  2. Right-click it and find the Run as administrator option.

If it worked, the launcher should open.

Is there an official Fix for Honkai: Star Rail launcher won’t start?

There is no clear reason for why the launcher won’t open for some players. There has yet to be an official announcement from HoYoverse on how to fix the launcher. These steps are just potential problem solvers and could possibly get the launcher to open again.
